The Homeland Equipment Area MVPs of the Week are: Ross Hempel, Danville, track. Ross won the 800-meter run at the Class A state track meet and was on the winning 1,600-meter relay team. Chaz Grider, Casey County, track: Chaz won the Class AA discus at the state track meet. Congratulations to Ross and Chaz.

The AAU-affiliated Winchester Shawnee Running Club is heading to a national meet. Three members of the team from Winchester qualified for nationals last weekend in a meet held at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Ill.. Aiyanna Jones placed first in the discus and second in the shot put. Jones set a new regional 6B AAU record in the discus with her throw of 61-03. Jones is a fifth-grader at Strode Station Elementary. Lexxus Graham placed third in the long jump and Clay Dixon placed second in the boys javelin.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Eileen Schilling shattered a conference record in one of her two wins at the SCAC Track & Field Championships Friday and Saturday. The Centre sophomore won the 5,000-meter run in 17 minutes, 32.14 seconds, breaking the SCAC by 22 seconds as well as the track record and her own school record. She also assured herself of a qualifying spot in the 5,000 at the NCAA Division III championships May 26-28 at Waverly, Iowa. (She was already a provisional qualifier.

While the Mercer County meet was a varsity meet, most schools brought junior varsity runners to see them in new events. Still, the Colts won took third for the girls' team and sixth for the boys. Jeff Walker (5:10) and Annika Stryker (6:33) both had season bests in the 1600. Alexis Kierstead tossed 71-feet, 3-inches on the discus throw for second place in the competition. Mariah Cates long jumped 13-feet, 6-inches for second in her event. Jonathan and Allison Rehner both won the pole vault event, tieing their personal bests of 11-feet and 8-feet respectively.

NICHOLASVILLE - Harrodsburg's boys earned four second-place finishes and two thirds to take home fifth at the Jessamine County Relays Tuesday. Harrodsburg finished second in the 400- and 800-meter relay and 800 sprint medley relays, while Michael Harris also took second in the discus throw with a distance of 134 feet, 3 inches. Harris was third in the shot put at 39-6 and the Pioneers were third in the 1,600 relay. Mercer County's Josh Kidd was third in the high jump with a jump of 5-10 and Andrew McCloud was fourth in the long jump at 18-7 1/2. GIRLS Team scores - 1. Madison Southern 77; 2. The Danville girls had six firsts and three seconds Saturday to finish runner-up to Bishop Brossart at the Warriors Invitational at Southwestern High School. Danville finished with 118 points, 12 behind Brossart. Casey County was third, Boyle County finished fifth and Lincoln County was 12th. On the boys' side, Southwestern won with 127 points, Boyle tied for third with Russell County, Casey was sixth, Mercer County seventh, Danville ninth and Lincoln 13th. The Admiral girls had firsts from Allie Payne in the 200, Caroline Stroup in the 300 hurdles, Kaitlin Snapp in the 3200, Candice Taylor in the long jump, Diamond Pace in the triple jump, and the team of Keaira Harris, Pace, Riona Watson and Brittany Bethea won the 1600 relay.

Emily Niehaus of Centre College won three events and teammate David Orr won two Saturday in the Centre Invitational track and field meet at Farris Stadium. Niehaus won the women's hammer and discus throws and shot put, while Orr won the men's javelin throw and pole vault. Centre's men finished second out of nine teams, seven points behind champion Eastern Kentucky. The Centre women were third out of eight teams. The Centre College women won and the men finished second Friday at the Centre Twilight Meet. Hillary Botts won the hammer throw (160-6) and shot put (36-2 1/4) and was second in discus. Julie Fleming won the 400 (1:00.32), Hannah Ellis won the 800 (2:23.41) and Centre also won the 1,600 relay (4:31.23). Annie Wigginton was second in the 800, Lilly Campbell was second in the 100 hurdles, Mary Cundiff was second in the javelin and Stephanie Hale took second in the high jump. Centre also took second in the 400 relay.

The Mercer County boys and girls swept an all-comers meet packed with larger schools Tuesday at Versailles. Half a dozen Class AAA schools competed in the meet hosted by Woodford County, and Class AA Mercer's emerged with a 221/2-point victory over Harrison County in the boys standings, while the Mercer girls edged Paul Dunbar by six points. Chrys Jones gave the Mercer boys three of their four wins in the triple jump, long jump and high jump. Loran Crowell won the 800-meter run and was second in the 3,200 and the discus for the Mercer girls, who also won two relays.
