The board of directors of Jessamine County Parks and Recreation agreed to work toward establishing a dog park in Nicholasville at its Tuesday meeting. "It's about time," said David Jewel, one of the supporters of the idea. "Dog owners have been waiting for this decision for two years. " Emily Hill, another member of the audience, said that many people in Nicholasville don't have fenced in yards, and their dogs are in desperate need of space where they can run freely. "This way, they can ran and be safe," she said.

Fiscal Court voted yesterday to allow a dog park to be built on Jessamine County Parks and Recreation land, if the board agreed to provide necessary measures, like insurance and maintenance. Judge Wm. Neal Cassity was at first skeptical of the proposed location behind the humane society. "What do you think would happen if we put this beside the humane society?"he asked. "You would have 700 dogs barking at once. " Magistrate Bobby Day Wilson thought the details could be worked out later.

The Winchester Clark-County Parks and Recreation Board learned Monday night that it will have to address an issue with the indoor pool facility at the Winchester-Clark County Health and Wellness Center. The problem stems from too-high chlorine levels in both the therapeutic and lap pools at various times. This has led to an issue with the caulking in both pools. The machine that pumps chlorine also has been a consistent problem since the aquatic center opened last June. What was causing the problem wasn’t immediately clear, and no decision was made on a permanent fixture until the board reviewed past history of chlorine levels in the pool during the past few months.

After handing out youth sports facilities agreements months ago to youth sports league leaders, Parks and Recreation is getting them back, signatures and all. "I think it's in the best interest of the kids overall," said Jay Webb, director of Jessamine County Youth Softball. "Same here, I think it's a great thing," said Jeff Barnes, director of Jessamine County Youth Baseball. Barnes and Webb turned in their agreements at the meeting, and said it was probably the first time that youth sports leagues and Parks and Recreation have been on the same page.

To the editor, A good skate park in Nicholasville will be an asset to our community. The good will far outweigh the bad. Oftentimes, some of us fear the unknown and don't want it in our backyard. Lot's of thought went into this project; it didn't just happen. There were several public meetings and the meetings were advertised in The Jessamine Journal. It was not a secret. The skate park can help bring visitors to our community to be spectators or compete in various competitions and spend their money here in our stores, restaurant's, and hotels.

On a sunny Monday morning the world has become a much brighter place for Tilly, a 10-month old collie/boxer that has been selected as the 100th dog to participate in the Danville-Boyle County Humane Society's Mutts with Manners Program. I am frantic. I have to take my dog to the dog park for a walk, do laundry and fix dinner all before the big event, which must go uninterrupted or I might miss out on some crucial bit of information. I have an addiction. It isn't harmful. It is something I am not ashamed of but it is hard to tell others since they may mock me. "Hi, I am Jennifer and I am addicted to The Biggest Loser. " Maybe that makes me a loser, but I don't care. I can't get enough of it. I get all my responsibilities out of the way and snuggle up on the couch and turn the TV to high definition so I can see every single grimace on the contestants faces.

I am sitting in the backyard with my dog Annie. We aren't really doing anything. Just staying still so we won't get too hot but I swear she is smiling. I wonder what can make her smile on such a scorcher of a day. I wonder how she has found bliss on an unpleasantly muggy day. But there she is smiling and wagging her tail with each glance her way. I wonder what she knows that I don't. I decided to observe her over the next week and came to the conclusion that I can learn a lot from her. She never tries to pretend to be something she isn't.

Please give thanks to the cooks and those who clean up at the end of the day! Now what's going to become of Rover tomorrow? Have you worked with him over the year so he can come into the dining room and lie quietly on a rug in the corner while you enjoy your company? If so, kudos to you for your efforts that are now paying off. One thing to remember this Thursday is to feed your pets their own food when their mealtimes arrive.

A friend called and asked if her dog would grieve less over the demise of the older pet if she got a replacement. Then she asked whether she should get a pup or an older dog from the shelter. I found this was a sticky question because of timing and trying to coordinate the personalities of two dogs that were total strangers. I told her of my experiences of adding a pet to the household. My first pet was a very dominant-natured cat, and when I acquired a pup I kept the dog in a separate room.
