HUSTONVILLE ? After 16 years of stagnate water rates, Hustonville City Council approved an increase last week to pay for skyrocketing insurance rates and future water projects. The 10 percent increase will take effect with the new water budget at the beginning of the fiscal year July 1. Council members approved the vote five to one, with member Jimmy Lane in opposition. The rate increase was given first reading in May. At that time, the Advocate reported the price of 2,000 gallons of water would increase from $8.83 to $9.71, while outside the city limits the price would rise from $11.04 to $12.14.

HUSTONVILLE - A water line break Tuesday near Hustonville brought out the best in the city's eastern neighbors, proving the good Samaritans of Crab Orchard know life's lemons are best served as lemonade. Hustonville Mayor Larry "Pup" Doss said the city had suffered a "pretty bad" water line break near the Arcadia subdivision Tuesday, creating a boil-water advisory for residents as a Hustonville water crew looked for the location of the break. Both water tanks were almost entirely drained before the break was repaired.

At 11:23 p.m. Monday, a caller who lives on Smith Street told a Danville dispatcher that a white male had jumped off the roof of a neighbor's house and confronted the caller's brother, Assistant Police Chief Tony Gray said. The subject, who implied he had a gun, said he needed to be transported somewhere because police were coming to his house, Gray said. When the caller's brother refused, the subject ran down the street, Gray said.
