Do you ever wonder about the air you breathe? I know for myself when I drive behind a dump truck, I try to stay far behind the black diesel exhaust. Being stuck in traffic behind such a poisonous pollutant can really irritate my nose and throat. Not only does it smell bad but carbon monoxide is not healthy to breathe. Have you ever stopped to think about the air you breathe indoors? Noticing black diesel exhaust spewing out a dump truck is easily identifiable. What about substances we can't see?

An early morning accident shut down Interstate 64 and snarled traffic through Winchester this morning as workers cleaned up the scene. Police were called to exit 96 at 6:08 a.m. today after a truck overturned and dumped a load of scrap metal. Winchester Police Sgt. Tony Kirk said the truck was heading toward the westbound off ramp when the truck overturned. "(The driver) doesn't know what happened, but maybe a load shifted," Kirk said. The white dump truck turned onto its side and slid 200 feet across both westbound lanes and into the median, where it came to rest, he said.

Danville police and firefighters have shut down the northbound lanes of Hustonville Road today at Second Street due to an oily street surface that has created treacherous driving conditions. The oil slick developed on the hill in front of Lee’s Famous Recipe shortly after noon, causing at least two non-injury vehicle mishaps with cars losing control as they came down the hill. Assistant Fire Chief Woody Ball said the slick patch apparently occurred when a vehicle lost petroleum fluids as it traveled north and mixed with the light rain to create dangerous driving conditions.

CRAB ORCHARD - The volunteer fire department in Crab Orchard will be getting a couple upgrades thanks to approximately $9,200 in spending approved by the city commission. Mayor Billy Shelton said city commissioners approved the purchase of seven new digital radios - five handheld units and two vehicle-mounted units - at the commission meeting Dec. 6. The radio upgrade, which will cost about $5,700, was made necessary by an impending federal mandate from the Federal Communications Commission requiring all agencies to upgrade their radio communications by Jan. 1. City commissioners also approved paying $3,520 for the installation of a new 12-by-20-foot storage unit for the fire department's equipment, Shelton said.

As a result, The Advocate received anonymous phone calls asking the newspaper to check into whether or not the county was going through the proper P&Z channels and paying the appropriate fees.
