LANCASTER - Garrard County coach Steve Stonebraker knows taking on Dunbar is not the easiest way to start the season. However, he also knows playing a Class AAAA team like Dunbar can have a positive impact on his program. "If we could win, it would be one of the biggest wins ever for our program," sad Stonebraker. "If not, then it is a game that will still push our program ahead. Playing a good team in one of the state's best bowl games, or perhaps the state's best bowl game, can only help us. " Garrard opens its season Saturday against Dunbar in the Bob Allen Pigskin Classic at Admiral Stadium in Danville.

LEXINGTON ? George Rogers Clark coach Paul Columbia didn't feel well following his team's 13-7 loss to Dunbar Friday night. "It's as about as sick as I can be after a loss," Columbia said as Dunbar's student body stormed the field following the Bulldogs' successful comeback in the second half. "Dunbar played hard and made some plays, but what a sickening feeling to give it away. It's just a sick feeling. It just shouldn't have happened. " Clark (1-2) committed two of its three miscues in the second half, while the hosts scored two touchdowns to overcome a 7-0 deficit at the break.

The West Jessamine Colts knew Dunbar would be tough as they headed into the 27th District tournament semi-finals at the dog pound Thursday. "I was nervous. I mean, you've got Dunbar, they're a big ranked team. They've got their home field to play on," West senior Kyle Withers said of the defending state champions. West couldn't knock off Dunbar to head to the district finals, losing 4-1. Dunbar scored two quick goals within nine minutes of the first half, one of which was a wide open shot on West goalkeeper Travis Arnold.

Braxston Miller's fade away shot as time wound down at Dunbar edged Lincoln ahead of the Bulldogs for a 68-67 win at the "Dog Pound" in Lexington. It was a case of being in the right place at the right time that allowed the senior Patriot to put up the game-winning shot. Trailing 67-66 as the clock fell under 10 seconds, Lincoln brought the ball up court and Trent Calhoun went for the possible game-winner when he launched a three-point shot. But the shot missed. Miller stumbled at the top of the key and was falling down as the missed shot bounced off the rim. The quick-thinking Miller instinctively reached out for the catch and threw up the shot before hitting the floor.

The outcome looked bleak for West Jessamine as its host Dunbar jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning before the Colts finally got going. But West's efforts weren't quite enough to outlast the Bulldogs, who are ranked in top 30 in the nation this year, losing 7-5. "We're never happy to get close [and not win], but besides the first inning we played pretty well," West coach Jody Hamilton said. "I don't know, I guess it was the first inning jitters, I hope that was the reason.
