The boys' soccer preseason rankings were released Wednesday by the state coaches' association. The East Jessamine Jaguars are ranked No. 19 to start the year. East won its first match of the season Tuesday night, defeating Southwestern 5-0. The Jaguars (1-0-0) went 18-5-2 in 2010, falling in the 14th Region championship to Dunbar.

Boyle County's John Anderson finished 12th to lead all runners Thursday at the R.J. Corman AJ Special at Asbury College in Wilmore. Burgin's William Beckerson was 17th to lead the Bulldogs, and Kelsey Barbato led the Boyle girls with a 36th place finish. "I was pleased with their races considering they were coming in with tired legs from some hard workout this week," Boyle coach Grace Jameson said. "The girls also had a good race, and I'm thrilled with the start of our season.

LEXINGTON - When George Rogers Clark baseball coach Larry Allison left the field on Wednesday following a 2-0 loss to Dunbar in the semi-state 6 opener, he said that in order for the second-ranked Bulldogs to have a chance to reach the state tournament they still had to get by his team one more time. The Cardinals backed up their coaches' confidence in his team on Thursday with a come-from-behind 5-4 win over the Bulldogs, forcing a third and decisive game today at Tates Creek.

COACH: Bill Kirk, second year. LAST YEAR: The Lady Cardinals broke even and went 10-10, winning the 24th District title before losing to Bourbon County in the 12th Region tournament. Clark lost nine starters last year. TOP RETURNEES: Sarah Warner, Katie Sharp, Kelsey Neumann, Ashtyn Abner, Becca Curtis and Kaitlyn Boldt. "(They) are good players with experience at the varsity level. " Seniors Warner and Abner will serve as team captains. EARLY START: Kirk said his team is in better shape heading into the season.

West Jessamine freshman Fred Allen Meyer shot an even-par 70 at the Montgomery County Invitational on Saturday to lead the Colts to a first-place finish. Meyer also placed first as an individual. Connor Haas shot a 76 to tie for 15th,.Travis Rose was 7-over-par, placing 19th, and Jordan Wood carded a 78 to tie for 26th. West shot a combined 301, beating Dunbar by five strokes. The event was held at Mt. Sterling Golf Course and Country Club.

Despite losing their coach to a red card in the first half, the East Jessamine girls soccer team pulled out a 2-1 win over Dunbar last Thursday. "The girls were the best I have seen them to date," coach Alex Shearer said. After disputing several calls with officials late in the first half ? which led to a successful penalty kick for Dunbar ? at the Lady Jags' home game, a frazzled Shearer was carded and asked to leave. "It was really a combination of bad calls," he said.

The George Rogers Clark High School girls' soccer team opened up the season with a 3-1 loss to Tates Creek Tuesday night in the Fayette County Soccer Spectacular at Dunbar. The Lady Cards scored their only goal of the contest on a penalty kick by Becca Curtis. Despite the loss, Clark coach Bill Kirk was pleased with his team's performance. "It was a good workout for our first competitive game. We were given a lesson in teamwork and speed of play by a well-organized team. " Kirk also was pleased with the play of several players.

The George Rogers Clark High School boys' golf team finished sixth in the GRC-Southwind Invitational Monday at Southwind Golf Course. Clark finished with a 306, while Lexington Christian captured the tournament title with a 267. Henry Clay was second with a 284, followed by Dunbar 285, Madison Central at 298 and Lexington Catholic with a 303. Clark was led by Brad Martin, who finished with a 2-over-par 73. The East Jessamine and West Jessamine boys' soccer teams squared off for the second time this fall on Thursday night. This time around there was a lot more riding on the game. The winner would advance to the district finals on Saturday and earn a birth in the regional tournament, while the loser would be sent home for good. Just like in the September meeting, it was East that was victorious following a fever-pitched 80 minutes. In the 11th minute of the match, Sam Miller drove to the goal.
