How to solve Winchester's downtown parking problem To the Sun: Here is a solution to the downtown parking. Eliminate the two-hour parking on East Broadway from Church Alley to Highland Street. That way the people who live and work on East Broadway will park on that portion of the street. They say the reason they don't like parking in the city parking lot on East Broadway is that they have had their cars broken into. That city parking lot is not being used. There are no parking problems on East Broadway since Corner Drug closed the snack bar and the rest of the store except for the pharmacy counter.

Paul Howard, owner of Howard Roofing, is renovating the large building into apartments. The apartments will offer affordable housing to his employees and others in the community. Workers on the roof were Jesus Samarron, Jesus Garcia, Juan Gonzalez, Jose Lopez and Reynaldo Rodriquez.

Temperatures plummeted from a high of 86 degrees Wednesday to 63 degrees on Thursday. Accompanying the much cooler temperatures was rain and strong winds to create a cold, damp day. The meeting was changed due to the Kentucky Main Street managers meeting, according to Lara Early, director.

Two Winchester men pleaded guilty to reduced charges Wednesday after they allegedly tried to break into a home on East Broadway six months ago. Howard Gross and Tony Gross both pleaded guilty to first-degree criminal mischief charges in Clark Circuit Court less than two weeks before their trial was set to begin. Both men were arrested after they were shot by the resident at 414 E. Broadway in the early morning hours of Sept. 26, 2012. Police said one of the residents woke around 4:45 a.m. when he heard someone inside the garage.

WINCHESTER POLICE Charged - Antonio Trevino, 49, of Mount Sterling, was charged Oct. 24 with theft by deception over $300 and theft by deception under $300. - Cassandra D. Miller, 22, of Mount Sterling, was charged Thursday with theft by unlawful taking under $300. Reports - At 10:52 a.m. Thursday, employees at Kmart reported that an employee had taken $145.88 in merchandise and had been stealing from the store for two months. During the two months, she allegedly took $1,500 in property from the store.

There are some great things happening in downtown Winchester and, unfortunately, too many of us use the downtown as a drive-through area rather than a destination and are therefore unlikely to see the changes that are ongoing.The Leeds Center for the Arts is now showing classic movies once a month, in the same manner that Kentucky Theatre in Lexington does on a weekly basis. This in addition to the many live programs that take place there throughout the year. Tenants are lined up to take spaces in the renovated Kerr Building along with some already there, and Wall Alley is undergoing a facelift to make it more amenable to the public.
