The holidays should be a time to spend with loved ones and to enjoy family. However, every year an estimated 6,000 individuals are taken out of the cheerful festivities to the emergency department by falls related to holiday decorating. Almost half of holiday decorating falls are the result of ladders, and men are more likely than women to be injured. Injuries from falling off the roof while mounting decorations are also common, as is falling from furniture stood on to place indoor decorations.

Dear Editor, I would like to thank the Danville-Boyle County rescue squad that assisted my husband, Arlis Luttrell, after his fall which resulted in a broken hip on May 17. I did not ask the EMT's names, but they were very prompt in getting to our house and very efficient and caring when moving and transporting my husband to the emergency room in Danville. I would also like to thank the hospital's emergency room staff, the staff on the entire fourth floor and Dr. White for the care they gave him and the compassion they showed me during this traumatic accident.

Dear Editor, Clearly, the patient comes first with Dr. Shahzad. Five weeks ago, my father was admitted to the Ephraim McDowell emergency room with dangerously high blood pressure. Dad is a resident of Florida and didn't have a local primary care physician. With a phone call at 4 p.m., Dr. Shahzad filled that need. While my father was still at the emergency room, Dr. Shahzad appeared with his warm smile and calming ways and attended to my father. I can tell you, I was glad to see him. Shortly thereafter, Dad was released to go home.

Dear Editor, The best thing that Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center has ever done was the valet parking. When I had to go to the hospital for anything - such as my heart would get out of rhythm - my wife would have to let me out and then go find a parking place. I have been to the hospital many, many times for different reasons. The last six months or so I have been at least 12 times to the pain clinic, emergency room and tests. The valet parking is the best thing that the hospital has ever done for its patients.
