Winchester Fire/EMS firefighter Greg Harrison uses a sledge hammer to take down a brick support post on the front of Hilltop Terrace. The post was all but knocked down when it was hit by a car Monday afternoon. Holding a heavy tarp to protect the window of Minuteman Press are firefighters' Chris Crockett, left, and Lt. Brad Case. A gruesome, single-car crash killed two people Tuesday and shut down a rain-slick U.S. 27 near Bryantsville for four hours. A man and a woman, both apparently in their early 20s, died when their Saturn left the road and slammed into a tree. "In my 27 years of service with EMS that's the worst car I've ever seen wrapped around a tree," said Mike Mullins, a senior lieutenant with Garrard County EMS. The car looked, he said, "like you wrapped a towel around the tree. " The victims had not been identified by this morning.
