Teri Wineland and Laura Caudill know some may see them as “new age” or even witches who practice "black magic" — which really makes them chuckle. They are Reiki masters, teachers of a scientific method for self-healing and maintaining health and well-being. They strongly feel the method changed their lives and can do so — physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually — for anyone who is open to learning. Wineland and Caudill, who say they have had a solid connection through Reiki for more than 10 years now, are offering what they call an intensive three-day workshop at the end of the month, which will teach through Reiki III. Degrees of Reiki are referred to as Reiki first, second and finally, the master-teacher degree — or Reiki I, II and III. Whatever you want to call it Reiki is a spiritual practice developed in 1922 by Japanese Buddhist Mikao Usui.

There are many things you can do to boost your energy level. WATER Drinking plenty of water keeps the cells in our body regulated. Our body is about 60-70 percent water. Water is essential for the body’s growth and maintenance, as it’s involved in a number of processes. For example, it helps get rid of waste, regulates temperature, and protects your joints and organs. Thirst is an obvious sign of dehydration, and in fact, you need water long before you feel thirsty.

Dear Editor, With our nation’s dependence on foreign oil, we have been funding both sides of the conflict in the Middle East by sending troops and resources out of one pocket and then paying an artificially high gas price out of the other pocket. The U.S. has 3 percent of global oil reserves, but consumes 25 percent of global demand. Our economic well-being is thus placed in the hands of countries not found on the U.S. Christmas-card list. With the help of Congressman Ben Chandler, EKU’s Center for Renewable and Alternative Fuel Technologies (CRAFT)

LEXINGTON - When his team needs a burst of energy,  John Calipari turns to Nerlens Noel to give the Wildcats a boost. “(He's) an energy guy, not a skill guy,” the Kentucky coach said. “(He's) not an up-and-under swing, hook guy, that's not who (he is). He's an energy guy.” The freshman forward had seven points and seven blocks in Kentucky's 74-46 victory over Portland Saturday at Rupp Arena. Noel's seven swats were a season-high for the Wildcats. Although not a flashy scorer, Noel has been consistent on the glass and has collected at least six boards in the team's nine games this season and collected nine boards against the outmanned Pilots.

Dear Editor, No one knows exactly what the recent Congressional leadership change holds in store for us. I sincerely hope it does not bring about a return to the mindset that pits government against the U.S. corporations that supply our nation with energy. Every consumer in America was upset over last year's gasoline and heating oil prices. Unfortunately, instead of attacking the root causes and really working to solve our energy predicament, some politicians seized upon this public discontent to make headlines for themselves by calling for windfall profits taxes on oil companies.

WASHINGTON - A man walking along the edge of a cliff slips and plummets toward jagged rocks and crashing surf, barely saving himself by clinging to the cliff's face. But the cliff is too steep to climb, so he shouts, "Is anyone up there?" A voice fills the sky - God's voice - saying: "Have faith and pray. If you have sufficient faith and pray well, you can let go and land gently, unhurt, amid the rocks and surf. " The man ponders this promise, then shouts: "Is there anyone else up there?"

LEXINGTON - He was the nation's No. 1 recruit and known for his shot-blocking skills. But what was either overlooked or unknown about Nerlens Noel is that he's an energy guy. Maybe Noel isn't going to be this year's Michael Kidd-Gilchrist for Kentucky, but the freshman center sure looks like he's going to have to be the Wildcats' catalyst, and he certainly only enhanced that belief with his play Friday in their 101-49 victory over Lafayette at...

Why waste energy cooling or heating an empty house? With a programmable thermostat you won't forget to adjust the thermostat before leaving each day and your thermostat can put the temperature back where you want it before you get home. Set the thermostat so that, while you are away, your home will be somewhat warmer in the summer, and cooler in the winter. Also, plan to use less heating or cooling while you are on vacation, and at night while you are asleep. A programmable thermostat can save you lots of money on your cooling and heating costs, and is an important tool to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions.

My friend Brooke recently spent $185 to convert her old Super 8 films into a DVD. When she popped the DVD into her player, she thought she would be watching family gatherings as well as some of her championship college diving meets. What she discovered were two short diving clips of herself as a young Olympic hopeful and an hour of her energetic friends at Schmidt Hall, Ball State University in Muncie, Ind., hamming it up for the camera. They (we) appeared to be spending more time socializing than studying, but that makes sense because who wants to film a bunch of kids highlighting their college texts?

For many college students, "pulling an all-nighter" is a familiar routine typically accomplished with copious amounts of caffeine. Often, the go-to option is a so-called "energy shot" drink that boasts a special blend of energy-boosting ingredients.  New research by a behavioral neuroscience professor and her students at Centre College calls the popular drink - and the extra boost it claims to provide - into question. And their preliminary findings are creating quite a buzz. According to the recent study, "The effect of energy drinks on visual attention task performance," led by Centre's KatieAnn Skogsberg, assistant professor of psychology and behavioral neuroscience, the energy drinks may be no more effective than other sources of caffeine.

STANFORD - A performance contracting company is looking into the possibility that Lincoln County could make some major energy efficiency upgrades to its government facilities without adding anything to its bottom line. Lincoln County could potentially undertake $100,000 or more in upgrades that would reduce utility bills, said Matt Callahan with the Cincinnati-based energy efficiency company Perfection Group. Through projects coordinated by Perfection Group, organizations pay for upgrades with the savings they realize on their utility bills from the upgrades, Callahan said.

West Jessamine High School's tennis team has paved the way for its state championship quality talent in recent seasons - talent that must now be molded anew. The Colts boys team only returns one of its top six players (senior Andrew Monell) from last year after losing Zach Meikle to graduation and their top two doubles players, Logan and Tanner Sparks, to a temporary move to Singapore. “We have a lot of new faces this year - more than we've had in the past few years,” said boys coach Josh Yost.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Freshman Archie Goodwin tried to choose his words carefully as he analyzed why Kentucky lost 64-48 to Vanderbilt on Friday. “They played with more energy and toughness than we did. Then again, this is something every team has been doing to us all year. We didn't do what we needed to do, but at the same time it was like, 'Well this has happened so many times over the year.' Until we fix that, nothing changes,” Goodwin said after the Southeastern Conference tournament quarterfinal loss to a team UK¿beat twice during the season.

What can college students do to save the planet from near certain destruction? This is a question that the Kentucky Student Environmental Coalition has been asking ourselves for some time now, and the conclusion we have drawn is, a lot. That is why students from across the state, at several universities and colleges, have been organizing themselves to fight dirty energy and environmental injustice in their communities. That is why we have been starting campaigns to invest in our futures, the future of Kentucky, and a just, green economy.

With winter in full swing, our community's most vulnerable citizens can sometimes struggle to pay for essential services like heat and power.  Kentucky Utilities Company partners year-round with non-profit and community organizations to provide utility bill assistance and weatherization services to help those in need. This support is even more critical during cold weather months.   We also encourage customers who have the desire to help those in need to make voluntary contributions to our heating assistance program, the WinterCare Energy Fund.  The WinterCare Energy Fund is a nonprofit organization supported by KU and managed by an independent third party, the Community Action Council.
