LANCASTER - While a Garrard County victory Friday over winless Estill County wasn't guaranteed, it was pretty much assured. So Garrard coach Mark Scenters was looking to see how sharp and focused his team was in its district finale against the Engineers. And aside from one big play, the Golden Lions dominated en route to a 59-6 win at Dyehouse Stadium. “That's exactly what we're looking for, trying to be sharp. OWENSBORO - Boyle County jumped on Estill County early and rode a dominating pitching performance from KK Davis today in an 8-0 win over the Engineers in the second round of the Rawlings/KHSAA State Softball Tournament at Jack C. Fisher Park. Boyle (32-11) plays Ryle (22-13) for a spot in the state semifinals at 4 p.m. Davis retired the last 13 batters she faced and finished with eight strikeouts with just one walk and scattered four hits. Estill (31-10), did not get a ball out of the infield after the third inning.

Like the baseball team, the Lady Cardinals went extra innings to defeat the opposition. Clark crossed the plate with three runs in the 10th inning and escaped with a 7-4 victory over Estill County Monday night in Irvine. The Lady Cards (10-12) collected 17 hits, with three of those coming in their last appearance at the plate. Kolbi Mitchell and Skye Skinner led Clark's offense with a pair of doubles and a single, followed by Rebecca Strange and Whitney Conkwright with three hits each.

The George Rogers Clark baseball team picked up its first win of the season with a 5-0 shutout of Estill¿County Saturday afternoon in Irvine. It marked the first career win for coach Matt Ginter, whose team had lost its first seven games to open the season. Ginter, a former standout at the school and major league pitcher, is in his first season as baseball coach at Clark. The Cardinals (1-7) scored one run in the third inning, added another in the fourth and broke the game open with a pair of runs in the sixth inning.

Just hours after signing with Midway College to continue her basketball career, West Jessamine senior Erin Conner played in her final home game last Thursday, Feb. 9. Conner scored 15 points but West could not hold on to beat Estill County, losing 72-62. “I just wish we could have got a win for her here at her last home game,” West Jessamine coach Stephen Greene said. West got off to one of its best starts of the season, playing a solid first 10 minutes against the Lady Engineers.

The George Rogers Clark girls volleyball team swept neighboring Estill County Tuesday night in Irvine. In the varsity game, Clark won 25-11 and 25-23. The contest also was a fund-raiser for breast cancer research. “It was a great night,” Clark coach Robyn Curry said. “We participated in their Dig Pink Rally. The girls love to wear our special pink uniforms and help raise money for Breast Cancer.” The Lady Cardinals will close the regular season Thursday night at Lafayette, before opening the postseason Monday at Nicholas County.

Faye Anderson, 77, widow of Hershel Anderson, passed away at 11:11 p.m. Friday, May 20, at her home. A native of Estill County, she was the daughter of the late John Allen and Sarah Barnes Charles. Faye was a homemaker and a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Survivors include a son, Bev (Deborah) Anderson of Winchester; a daughter, Debra (Larry) Potter of Winchester; four grandchildren, Sarah (Adam) Chamberlain, Aaron Potter and Leslie and Kelsey Anderson; two great-grandchildren, Carly Potter and Alexis Chamberlain; a sister, Billie Jo Gill of Chester, Pa.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The George Rogers Clark baseball team opened the Tanner Dodge Classic in impressive fashion with an 11-0 shutout over Estill County in six innings Wednesday in Stanton. The Cardinals got a solid outing from ace Anthony Withrow and scored three runs in the top of the sixth to put the game away. Withrow, a senior, scattered three hits, struck out nine batters and walked just one. Nick Hyslop relieved Withrow in the sixth and struck out the side. T.K. Korb and Tyler Cain sparked Clark’s offense with three hits each, with Korb connecting on a pair of doubles.
