On the afternoon of April 3, Winchester native Michael McGuire's friend dropped him off at the pier in Ventura, Calif. There, McGuire dipped his toe in the Pacific Ocean, got on his bike and headed east. On his way, he passed a sign in Bishop, Calif., that marks 3,652 miles to Provincetown, Mass. Some time next month, McGuire will reach the Atlantic Ocean, completing a coast-to-coast trek entirely on a bicycle. While crossing the continent by bike has always been someting he's wanted to do, McGuire said he would have been stupid to do so without at lease some fundraising effort.

Although Lauren Mink's run as a contestant on “American Idol” is over, it doesn't mean the end of her career. “This is just the beginning! Stay tuned,” Mink wrote on her Facebook page after Thursday's episode. After making it to Hollywood by singing “Country Strong” for judges in Savannah, Ga., Mink failed to advance with her performance of “Alone” by Heart. Contestants sang a cappella for judges and did not receive feedback on their performances, but Jennifer Lopez did notice a key change during Mink's song.

Local singer Lauren Mink will be taking her talents to Hollywood. Mink wowed judges and viewers of “American Idol” Wednesday with her own a cappella rendition of “Country Strong,” the title song of the 2010 movie starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Tim McGraw. “That was beautiful,” said judge Steven Tyler. “You got so much passion, so much passion behind the notes. Nice little audition there girl.” Judge Jennifer Lopez, pointing to her arms during Mink's performance, proclaimed that the 25-year-old's singing gave her “goosies.” Before her performance in Savannah, Ga., the show featured a video of Mink at STRIDE in Winchester, having fun with some of the clients.
