Boyle County received good news this month in the form of $621.67 donated to local 4-H programs via voluntary donations people made when purchasing their farm license plate tags in 2012. In February, Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture James Comer announced that for the first time, proceeds from the voluntary donations on farm license plates would be divided equally among 4-H, FFA and Kentucky Proud. In the winter of 1944, the snow came. It came full-force, dropping two feet on the Ardennes region of Belgium. That was the winter Cova Duvall nearly lost his feet, when he wondered how much worse things could get. The snow was blinding, and heavy cloud cover made it nearly impossible to see. “It's amazing what men went through. You take fighting snow two-feet deep, the drop it down to 24 below zero, you couldn't hardly stand it,”¿Duvall said. Earlier that year, Duvall was just an 18-year-old farm kid in rural Edmonson County, in western Kentucky.

An insurance company that sued the city of Danville last month over a claim it paid for damages caused to a business by a backed up sewer has withdrawn the complaint.  Farm Bureau Insurance voluntarily pulled the lawsuit on Aug. 31, even before attorneys for the city responded to allegations made in the complaint.  The motion to withdraw, filed for Farm Bureau by Campbellsville attorney John Miller, does not provide any explanation for the company's change of heart. The lawsuit alleged the city  failed to properly maintain a sewer line near the now defunct Danville Christian Bookstore and Music Center.

FRANKFORT - A recent grant from the Walmart Foundation allowed the Kentucky Association of Food Banks to purchase and distribute 370,000 pounds of Kentucky-grown produce this summer through its Farms to Food Banks program. This is the equivalent of half a plate full of fruits and vegetables for 569,000 meals. Farms to Food Banks provides fresh, healthy produce to Kentuckians in need while reducing the amount of wasted food and providing additional markets for farmers. The association purchases at cost Kentucky-grown surplus and No. 2 produce that is edible but not saleable on the retail market.
