Ernie Holman has trained the Danville Fire Department. Not on how to put out fires, although as owner of Sun Tropic Pools he knows plenty about water, but he has trained them how to safely start fire - works. Nowadays he says the firefighters have it down, and Holman is there for technical assistance. He wired the finale of this year's show at the fairgrounds and Millennium Park. Holman is permitted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms as a pyrotechnic. He does a show at his farm that he says has the same class of fireworks as Thunder Over Louisville.

Winchester's Fourth of July celebration this year will include a double grand finale fireworks show, a performance by America's Junior Miss Michelle Rodgers and a special ceremony to honor local veterans. And for people who can't get enough of the fun and the fireworks, there will be plenty of time to attend other celebrations, thanks to a new tradition. The festivities actually will be held July 3 rather than July 4 so as to avoid competing with bigger fireworks shows throughout the region.

Dear Editor, Congratulations to our Boyle County football team for Friday's impressive win over Johnson Central. As always after a first game, they have a few things that need working on. But I have no doubt the mistakes will soon get corrected. However, I was very disappointed in many other events surrounding the game. It started with no color guard being displayed on the field during the playing of our national anthem. It continued with the lack of fireworks ? both during the national anthem and after each Boyle score.

The Fourth of July celebration has been something the citizens of Clark County, as well as those from surrounding counties, look forward to each year. "We're going to give the people of Clark County a way to celebrate our independence," said Jim Snapp, recreational specialist with the Clark County Parks and Recreation Department. "That's what it was and still is. " The celebration will be on July 4, despite the holiday being in the middle of the work week. Snapp admitted that this may hurt attendance, but Wednesday was simply too far from the weekend to move the event.

Perryville in 1862 was like many other communities in Kentucky. It had a general store, post office, drug store and people busy loading and unloading wagons in the street. Some scenes from that era will be recreated this weekend when Perryville hosts thousands of guests attending the national Civil War battle re-enactment at Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site. Parts of the main business section of Perryville - called Merchants' Row - have been preserved and will allow guests to see what the town looked like in 1862.
