I think the city of Danville ought to have a law not to set off fireworks until the Fourth of July. It has been hard to sleep with them going off. It started about the first of July and they would set them off from 8 p.m. to 2 or 3 a.m. David Wilson Danville

To everyone who is responsible for the wonderful display of fireworks we enjoy, freely, every year at Millenium Park: a big “Thank You” for the risk you take, the expense you go to and the time you spend so that our community can have this.  I don't understand much of the science of pyrotechnics, so I am just amazed each year at the color and design. The assortment this year was fantastic. We liked the spirals, the hearts, the unique fountains, the sizzly ones. It was great, and we thank you!

Dear Editor, I just wanted to express how nice the fireworks display was on July 4. We arrived a little after 8:30 p.m. and needed to eat at McDonald’s on Perryville Road. After arriving and seeing so many people already set up for the occasion, we decided to join in and park at the Big Lots parking lot. The staff at McDonald’s was extremely busy, but courteous. Everyone had an enjoyable time. We just wanted to say thanks to all who planned and promoted this event.

You can celebrate wherever you want on July 4, but be here on the 3rd. That's the theme of this year's Freedom Celebration at Lykins Park tonight. Winchester decided to do its Fourth of July concert and fireworks show the day before the holiday so it wouldn't compete with others in the region and draw a bigger crowd. The gates open at 5 p.m., and the celebration will get under way at 6 with a tribute to veterans. County Attorney Brian Thomas will emcee the event, and Josh McFarland will be the guest speaker.

To the editor, If the days since July 4th are any indication of the effectiveness of the new city fireworks ordinance, I don't believe it will work. Fireworks in our neighborhood have been going off all hours of the day and night. It is my understanding the acceptable hours are 6-9 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, as well as certain holidays. On Friday, July 6, which according to the ordinance is an allowable evening for fireworks during the hours of 6-9 p.m., fireworks were still going off in our neighborhood well after midnight.
