WMMT-FM is the community radio station of Appalshop Inc., located in Whitesburg, deep in the coal fields of central Appalachia. We serve about 50 counties in rural Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina and West Virginia through our FM broadcast signal, and the world via real-time online streaming. We are funded through listener support, business underwriting, and the occasional grant to produce radio documentaries about Appalachia. We are not an NPR affiliate, but like countless other community radio stations, we receive funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting that is critical to our survival.

For 15 years Johnny Randolph was a household name in Danville, especially in houses inhabited by radio listeners. From 1979 through 1989, he was in a partnership that ran WKLO. From 1989-94, he was managing partner of WHIR. In both jobs, he also served as so-called "on-air talent. " And when he wasn't spinning records and chatting on air at the two stations, he was making a name for himself in the community by serving on numerous boards, like the ones that ran the local United Way and the Boyle County Senior Citizens Center.

Jayme Phillips, the morning deejay on WPBK-FM, could be Lincoln County's answer to Dr. Johnny Fever. But Mr. Phillips doesn't need to borrow any of Dr. Fever's flamboyance. He's a colorful figure in his own right. At times a professional-wrestling promoter, auctioneer, motorcycle-shop operator, city councilman, and candidate for other political offices, Mr. Phillips often serves as master of ceremonies at various civic engagements, such as last spring's Chamber of Commerce Banquet, where a quip he made during the door-prize presentations still resounds in the minds of some.

By Michael Broihier Stanford's radio station, WPBK-FM, is ready to broadcast, said station manager Renee Knies. Ms. Knies plans to put the station on the air at 102.9 FM Dec. 15 with Christmas music and then begin a regular broadcast schedule on January 1. As can be discerned from the station's call letters, the primary sponsor of the station's programming is PBK bank. In addition to its primary sponsor, WPBK will have a format called "brokerage radio," where individuals, churches, civic groups and businesses may buy time to run whatever programming they choose.

Lincoln County will soon have its own radio station, according to plans by Jon Logan Smith, Lincoln County native and President of Lincoln Garrard Broadcasting Company, Inc. The company has entered into an agreement to provide local radio service to Lincoln County. The station will operate on 102.9 FM and broadcast from a location in the Highland section of the county, Smith said. From that location, all of the geographic area of Lincoln County will receive a strong signal from the station, he said.
