The Boonesboro Lions Club is proud to announce its 103rd charity fish fry, Saturday, June 2, from 1 to 6 p.m. at its Ford Hampton Road clubhouse. According to Gaza Desi, the club's most senior member, and a club history written by current and founding member J. C. Dykes, the club began its traditional fish fry activities in 1953 and has held one or two each year for 58 years. The club believes that this event is the longest-running fundraiser in the community. There were 56 fish fry events through 1988, and since there have been two fish fry events each year on the first Saturdays in June and in October, approximately 102 fish fries to date.

For generations, kids have watched Bugs Bunny gobble up pound after pound of carrots. And while many will always associate the carrot as 'rabbit food,' there are plenty of reasons why we should all be gnawing on this super food! Carrots originated over 3000 years ago in Central Asia and were originally white, yellow, and purple in color. Their first use was strictly for medicinal purposes and it was not until the 1600's that the Dutch developed the orange carrot for consumption. Today, carrots are grown worldwide in a variety of colors, and while they are available year-round, they are at their peak from late summer to early spring.

PLEASANT HILL - A number of food events are on tap at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill. “Maple Syrup Pancake Breakfasts” are set for 7:30-10 a.m. March 3 and 10. The buffet breakfasts will include buttermilk pancakes and fried cornmeal mush with hot maple syrup and butter; bacon; sausage; scrambled eggs; cinnamon- and bourbon-smothered apples; fried potatoes; juice; and coffee. After breakfast, attendees can see how the sap collected from the maple trees at Shaker Village is cooked down to make freshly-tapped syrup.

North Carolina leads sweet potato production in the United States; followed closely by California, Louisiana, and Mississippi.

Ichiban Buffet, located at 960 N. Main St., opened its doors on Valentine’s Day with fare that is designed to please the heart of nearly every food lover. Owner Jacky Lin said his restaurant offers something that Nicholasville does not have. “We’ve got an all-you-can eat sushi bar and hibachi grill,” Lin said. “And we’ve got Chinese food, American food like (chicken) nuggets, French fries, and we also have pizza and other foods.” Ichiban offers more than 150 items daily, including shrimp, beef, pork, chicken, mussels, fried dumplings, vegetables, lo mein, fried rice, fresh fruit and much more, Lin said.
