Gabby Gabriel may be a freshman, but she's no rookie. In her second season as Lincoln County's pitcher, Gabriel is continuing to build on the dream that first formed when she was 10 years old - and on the experience she gained in her first year at the varsity level. It wasn't always smooth sailing for Gabriel in her first year in the circle, but it was a successful season. And she said the things she learned last year have helped her become even better this year. “Being able last year to see the competition, see what I needed to do and know, 'I'm going to have to do this to get better,'” she said.

LEXINGTON - Freshman quarterback Reese Phillips graduated from Signal Mountain (Tenn.) High School in December so he could enroll at Kentucky and go through offensive coordinator Neal Brown's first spring practice with the Wildcats. Phillips completed 172 of 274 passes for 2,274 yards and 15 scores with just three interceptions his senior season and was named the MVP of the Tennessee East-West all-star classic after going 10 for 10 for 95 yards and a touchdown. He offered his insights into his play, the quarterback competition and more after practice Friday.

Just when it seemed that Alex Poythress had turned the corner and was ready to play the way coach John Calipari envisioned, the Kentucky freshman took a step back at Arkansas. Poythress had 21 points and seven rebounds in an overtime win over Missouri in which he displayed the quick, powerful moves to the basket Calipari knew he had. Against Mississippi State, he came back with 16 points and eight rebounds. In the two games, he was a combined 15-for-21 from the field and had just one turnover.

Archie Goodwin is already Kentucky's leading scorer, which is not a huge surprise to Kevin Davis, high Arkansas high school coach. But like UK fans and coach John Calipari, Davis still sees a huge upside for his former star. “I really thought he was going to score. I knew from having him what a natural scorer he was, and he could score so easily even at a young age. In AAU nationals, his numbers were always up,” said Davis. “Last year I told my assistant coach how good Archie was and that he was going to keep being really good at Kentucky.

Against Marshall last week, Alex Poythress had nine points and nine rebounds in 21 minutes. Nerlens Noel had 12 points and 11 rebounds for his first UK double-double and was widely praised. Even though Poythress had only three less points and two less rebounds, he was not praised for his play. "Look, Alex Poythress did some good things and then he reverted at times. (He) just grabbed a guy on a foul, wanted to stop playing, left his feet three times because he was late getting to the guy. Instead of being ready and in and then you can close with your hands up, or you can stand straight up and down, be late going to the shooter so you got to leave your feet, which he did three or four times," Calipari said.

Marlee Smith is getting in plenty of basketball these days. The Boyle County freshman plays JV basketball for the Rebels, then has to turn right around and get ready to start for the varsity squad. But Smith said she is doing exactly what she wants, and what she needs to do to become a better player. “It really helps me because I get to play two games, so I'm getting to play with girls I'm going to play with my senior year, and also playing with the girls I'm going to play with for two more years,” said Smith, whose 4-1 Rebels open up 45th District play tonight against 4-0 Garrard County.

LEXINGTON - Even though this will be their first official game at Kentucky, senior guard Julius Mays and sophomore guard Ryan Harrow both played in big-time games like the one the Wildcats have Friday in Brooklyn, N.Y., against Maryland before they transferred to Kentucky. Harrow played a season at North Carolina State before transferring to Kentucky last year. Mays played two years at North Carolina State and one at Wright State before transferring to Kentucky this season, where he's eligible because he is a graduate student.

LEXINGTON - There was so much that freshman Archie Goodwin did that Kentucky coach John Calipari liked. He was 7-for-12 from the field and 7-for-8 at the foul line and had 22 points in Thursday's 93-61 exhibition win over Northwood. He had five assists, four rebounds and three blocked shots in 30 minutes. However, there were also things Calipari didn't like. His star freshman had five turnovers and got out of control more than his coach wanted - or says he will tolerate from him or freshman teammate Alex Poythress, who had four turnovers along with 11 points and seven rebounds.

The freshman center had an impressive debut with 14 points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots. However, he was far from pleased. “I still I think I could have hustled more. In both halves, I only had six hustle points. For myself, I need to get double-digit hustle points on top of double-digit one-on-one points. Also playing defense and trying to get loose balls and more rebounds,” Cauley-Stein said. He says hustle points come from things such as grabbing an offensive rebound and scoring or retrieving a ball knocked out of someone else's hands and scoring.

LEXINGTON - An open court stretched ahead of freshman Archie Goodwin on Wednesday night, with Julius Mays streaking ahead of him towards the basket. Goodwin went up for the dunk and brought the house down at the Blue-White game. Although it was an explosive play, it was one that infuriated coach John Calipari. “He passed up Julius Mays,” Calipari said. “That's unacceptable here and I let him know that. I wasn't real happy. After the game I said, 'You just took 22 shots, more than anybody on the team.
