Did you read that Esquire magazine chose Kentucky as the most stylish state in the union? Seems that, per capita, we’re the leaders in the style icon category with such sartorial luminaries as George Clooney, Diane Sawyer, Johnny Depp, and, of course Mr. GQ Himbadself, Forensic Anthropomorphologist, Cecil R. Ison, all hailing from the Bluegrass state. When I read that article, I asked myself why it was so. For a little while I couldn’t figure it out, and then it hit me — you are what you eat, right?

The new ownership at Eli's Shell in Nicholasville is hoping a new partnership with a nationwide cajun-chicken brand will spice up its food business. The restaurant inside the food mart has served home cooking for years but recently revamped its menu with offerings from Krispy Krunchy Chicken. “It's been tested and proven in markets from Louisiana all the way up to the northern states,” said Mark Peck, a KKC concept developer. “We try not to introduce our competitors, but what we try to do is enhance what they've done and make the market better.” The chicken brand boasts more than 1,000 locations nationwide, many in convenience stores but some standing alone, Peck said.

Clint Followell has a day job working in maintenance for the Danville school system but his passion is what he does in his off time. "I spend all my spare time out in the woods or on a pond bank," says the blond-haired 23-year-old. Followell grew up in Danville but learned his way around the woods from his father, the late James Followell, a Perryville native. The first turkey Followell killed was the last time they hunted together in spring 1997. "We both harvested some nice birds," says Followell, who still hunts a lot with his uncle, Gary Followell.

People tried to convince the Rev. Johnny Joseph to live in Kentucky. They offered him a worry-free life full of all the fried chicken he could eat and permanent respite from the turmoil of his homeland, Haiti. Joseph always refused. He said that his place was working for souls in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti's capitol city. On Monday, at the age of 39, Joseph passed away. Likely his Haitian lifestyle, a constant battle to survive, poor nutrition and substandard medical care, contributed to his death.

Beginning in mid-September, hungry Jessamine Countians won't have to drive into Lexington to eat at Cracker Barrel as work nears completion on the restaurant's Nicholasville location. The 10,000-square foot facility will employ more than 100 people and will be able to accommodate 194 patrons, according to corporate spokeswoman Julie Davis. Davis said when the company looks to locate a Cracker Barrel Country Store in a market, it checks many factors. "We'll look at population counts, we'll look at traffic counts, we'll look at what highways are there, and we'll look at what the competition is, what restaurants as well as what retail store are there," she said.
