STANFORD - Stanford Elementary School Principal Dan Story kicked off his birthday on Thursday by kicking off a pair of sensible flats and dancing in drag in front of hundreds of his students. After students successfully met a fundraising goal for the school's local Jumping Wildcats team, Story and fellow drag-queens-for-a-morning physical education teacher Brent Cole and fifth-grade social studies teacher Daniel Gay were obligated to strut their stuff in dresses, wigs and matching accessories in the school gym. Story agreed to dress up as a woman for his students if they raised $1,000 for the Jumping Wildcats, who tour area schools and perform to raise awareness about heart health for the American Heart Association.

The things they do would be hard enough without the rope. Wilmore Elementary students have been jumping, skipping and bouncing to dodge rapidly moving ropes for 22 years - and they have something to show for it. The school unveiled a banner last week celebrating that Wilmore has raised more than $150,000 for the American Heart Association through the Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser since 1991. The Jessamine County Board of Education bucked the administration's recommendation Monday night, voting to allow a donkey-basketball fundraiser for the Jessamine County FFA chapter. Concerns centered on insurance for the Buckeye Donkey Ball event that would take place in the spring and involve people playing basketball while riding donkeys. Chief operations officer Matt Moore explained that he and superintendent Lu Young could not recommend approval because they didn't believe signed waivers would release the district from responsibility for an injury if it was alleged a rider had acted inappropriately.

The Jessamine County FFA chapter is looking to jack up its fundraising efforts with a donkey-basketball event this spring but will have to wait for approval from the school board. Board members expressed concerns at Monday night's meeting about safety and insurance, and superintendent Lu Young warned them that groups like People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) vehemently opposed donkey basketball. The board will consider the matter at its Feb. 25 meeting. Agriculture teacher Mary Jennings said Tuesday that the chapter began researching donkey basketball after hearing from several other Kentucky chapters in a summer training who use similar events for fundraising.
