STANFORD - An assortment of vases and other objects sits on a dining table at Sandy Caudill's Stanford home. An antique pie safe is empty, ready for some of the objects to be placed inside. An ironing board stands nearby with parts of draperies on it that Caudill has made. A matching fabric is draped across the couch that it soon will cover. In the midst of all this, Sherry McGuffey arrives, ready to made order out of all of the chaos. After working at ATR for more than 27 years, Joe Lee decided he wanted to try to earn a living as a stripper. So the first thing he did was get a specialty license plate that reads "I strip" and turn an old barn into a workshop where he could practice and hone the skills necessary for his new craft. Lee's Restoration offers complete furniture restoration, including stripping and refinishing, chair caning and lathe work.

Kentucky is a state that has a reputation for being proud of its relatively long history. So it is not surprising to discover what the commonwealth's reputation is in the world of interior design. "We are what I call a 'tradition state' when it comes to interior design, and that's not surprising, given our tradition-rich history and our generally conservative attitudes," says Mary Cynthia Knowles, a veteran interior designer and co-owner, with her husband, True Knowles, of Martin-Durr-Caldwell Interior Designers of Danville and Lexington.

PHOENIX - In the West, where the deer and the antelope used to play, the spirit of "leave us alone" government used to prevail. But governments of Western states are becoming more like those elsewhere, alas. Consider the minor - but symptomatic - matter of the government-abetted aggression by "interior designers" against mere "decorators," or against interior designers whom other interior designers wish to demote to the status of decorators. Some designers think decorators should be a lesser breed without the law on its side.

Kim Leathers Stephens likes to keep busy, and she likes to keep busy making things that are "different. " That's what makes her shop in downtown Danville - Designs by Kim - a little different, too. She is a florist who does both fresh and silk flower arrangements for events large and small, from wedddings to funerals, but her designs are not limited to the floral world. Her store is filled with unusual items that she has created. She might paint a chicken on a piece of wallpaper and throw an old frame around it or paint a UK Wildcat or a John Deere tractor on a steppingstone.
