Recycling makesa big difference To the Sun: I'm guilty. Of what, I'm not sure, but I'm guilty of something. A friend recently asked me if I had any glass/paper/plastic to drop off at the WMU recycle center. In Florida during the winter, we had a yard waste pickup on Thursdays followed by a garbage and recyclable pickup (different trucks) on Friday. That was it: garbage in a curbie and recyclable items in a blue tote. It became normal procedure. In the news last week, it was reported that there are 50 billion bottles of water sold in our country every year.

Jessamine County emergency-response agencies and Lexington Hazmat Team 1 were called out Tuesday around 1 p.m. to the Bellerive Kroger Plaza in response to possible hazardous materials in the back of a Rumpke garbage truck. Officials determined there was no threat after an exhaustive search of the truck and its contents, said Nicholasville Fire Department deputy chief Kevin Baker. The driver of the truck claimed he saw “white puffy smoke” and a odd smell and immediately called his supervisors, said Molly Broadwater, a representative of Rumpke Waste and Recycling Services.

LANCASTER - In a surprising decision after months of lamentation on the city's apparent dire sanitation situation, Lancaster City Council voted against franchising trash pickup at Monday night's special meeting. At the July 7 meeting, the council discussed three bids it received for franchising garbage pickup from Dart Sanitation Inc., Rumpke of Kentucky Inc. and M & M Sanitation. The city had 14 days to act on the bids. Council member Jerry Domidion presented the council a document detailing estimates of proposed rates should the council decide to maintain its own sanitation service.

Dear Editor: In response to a letter referring to "Joe," an inmate who works at the convenience center in Alum Springs, he doesn't go through anyone's garbage. He only places the garbage around in the dumpsters to make more room. I have been up there several times to take my garbage and have heard people curse him because he asked if they lived in Boyle County when they had a different county license tag. He takes a lot of abuse from people. I don't know him personally, but I do know he works hard there.

Danville code enforcement officials are warning garbage customers they need to make sure the big green and blue containers are off the curb after pickup. City code enforcement officer Tom Broach said most of the issues with cans remaining on the street for several days after garbage and recycling collection have been around more densely populated areas, such as apartment complexes. “We are still getting complaints about the cans being left out on the day of pickup and we are really trying to get it under control as much as possible,” Broach said.

Lancaster passes nuisance ordinance LANCASTER - Lancaster City Council on Monday night approved a tough public-nuisance ordinance that allows the city to place a lien on the home of offenders. Under the ordinance, which targets unkempt yards, junk cars and dilapidated homes, police would issue a notice warning tenants or homeowners that they have five days to correct the problem. If the nuisance isn't fixed, the city will do it and charge for it. The city would then place a lien on the property for any unpaid charges.

Dear Editor: We want to express our sincere thanks to all the employees of Gose Pike Convenience Center. We have never known of a business being more accommodating to customers. All of their actions show their commitment to service. First, let's recognize their long hours of operation. Did you know they open promptly by 7 a.m. and stay open until at least 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday? That's 60 full hours per week. We especially appreciate their being open all day on Saturday when we, as well as many other citizens, do most of our yard work, garage and basement cleaning, etc. Secondly, we cannot overlook their friendly attitude and helpful assistance.
