LANCASTER - Even with a couple of days to go, it has already been a big week for Lincoln County baseball. The Patriots shuffled their lineup, swept the two games their coach said they had to win and matched their longest winning streak of the season, all in the span of three days and in the wake of their worst loss of the season. Their latest achievement was a 4-1 victory over Garrard County on Thursday that kept them in the running for the top seed in their district tournament. “We had to have these,” Lincoln coach Brad McNew said.

LANCASTER - Garrard County taxpayers can look forward to upcoming tax breaks, now that the $4.5 million hospital debt has been paid off 10 years earlier than originally estimated. Judge-Executive John Wilson told the Fiscal Court on Monday the debt has been paid off, saving the taxpayers about $3 million. Now, he plans to propose significant tax decreases. “The people of Garrard County deserve some tax relief,” Wilson said. “(The tax decreases) could be the largest in county history.” It will take at least two months for the cuts to be enacted, as magistrates will need to figure out the best alternatives for the residents of Garrard County.  “This is a promise that has been fulfilled,” Wilson said.

LANCASTER - Right in the middle of a heated conflict regarding the 2012-13 Garrard County budget, criminal charges were filed against Magistrate Ronnie Lane for an alleged incident that happened more than three months earlier. Lane, 72, of Lancaster, is accused of second-degree hindering prosecution or apprehension in connection with an alleged incident that happened Feb. 19, according to a criminal summons.  But the misdemeanor charge was not filed until May 29, according to court records.  Lane was allegedly with Misty Barker, 31, of Lancaster, on Feb. 19. Kentucky State Police Trooper David S. Fugate called Barker's cell phone and said he needed to interview her regarding the theft of a concrete saw.  Barker declined to meet with police and allegedly said she was getting into a car with Lane.

BURGIN - It's been quite the turnaround year for the Garrard County softball team. A year ago, the Golden Lions were in the midst of a two-win season with a team full of freshmen and eighth-graders. But after their 18-0 win Tuesday over Burgin, the Lions are one of the hottest teams in the 12th Region, having won five straight nine of their last 10 to sit at 23-12. “They've just got a lot more confidence and they're grown up as ball players. They're doing a million times better than I thought they would, and we're just becoming a better team,” said Garrard's only senior, outfielder Sydney Pozzuto, who drove in two runs Tuesday.

Cole Grecco felt confident he could win a regional title in the 3,200-meter run since that's his main race. But now the Garrard County junior has gained confidence in the 1,600 as well after winning Central Kentucky Conference and Class AA regional titles in the past two weeks. “My goals were to come out and win the 2-mile because I knew Bryant (Qualls of Mercer County) and Tucker (Jones of Corbin) were going to be really good in the mile," Grecco said. “I was OK in the mile, but then I stared working on that some more.

West Jessamine baseball has a knack for drama. Monday's doubleheader sweep of Garrard County at home featured two wins that came with help from clutch batting in the bottom of the seventh inning. Game one's 5-4 win came on a single by sophomore Troy Merida that passed beyond the grasp of Garrard's right fielder, scoring junior Daulton Peters and freshman Tucker Greer. “We finally caught a break,” said West head coach Jody Hamilton. “We have not been catching many breaks lately.” The Colts held a 3-1 lead until the fifth when junior Jarred Jones allowed an RBI single up the middle and a sacrifice fly later in the inning that scored a runner from third.

Micah Miniard of Boyle County threw a no-hitter Monday, but the Rebels' offense couldn't support him in a 1-0 loss to No. 8 Woodford County at Versailles. Miniard was matched against Clinton ace Clinton Hollon, who held Boyle to one hit. Both Miniard, a junior who has committed to Western Kentucky, and Hollon, a senior who has committed to Kentucky and is expected to be selected in the major league draft next month, threw in the 90s in the game as about half a dozen pro scouts looked on. “Micah was put on a big stage tonight going against Hollon, and he held his own to say the least,” Boyle coach Kyle Wynn said.
