LANCASTER - Garrard County Fiscal Court shot down the county's proposed 2012-13 budget 3-2 on Monday after several magistrates raised questions about the salary of county Economic Development Director Nathan Mick. Garrard Judge-Executive John Wilson called the action “a cheap shot” and a last-minute attempt to damage Mick's campaign for the 36th District state representative seat. Mick faces off against Lancaster farmer Jonathan Shell next Tuesday for the Republican nomination for the seat.

LANCASTER - Garrard County could save about $8,500 a year per inmate following the implementation of a new program that allows in-home incarceration. “This won't work for everybody,” Judge-Executive John Wilson admitted. For those it will work for, he added, it could be worth it. The new program will allow the county to monitor those awaiting trial using ankle and phone monitoring devices acquired through Corrisoft. The county spends about $29 each day someone is in jail, not counting any medical costs, which also are covered fully by the county.

LANCASTER - Paramedics in Garrard County will begin to earn an amount that is more comparable to the paramedics in nearby counties, according to a decision made by the Garrard County Fiscal Court Monday night. “We're the lowest paid for an hour's drive,” said EMS Director Stephanie Elam. She credits this as part of the reason the program has difficulty retaining paramedics. The Garrard program also is not able to offer some of the benefits neighboring counties can, such as full-coverage health insurance and dental insurance.

Garrard County got a run in the bottom of the seventh on a wild pitch to pull out a 5-4 45th District win over visiting Danville on Tuesday. Sammy Galloway went the distance on the mound to pick up the win, and drilled a two-run home run in the sixth to tie the game at 4-4. “This was a hard-fought battle. Both teams played well,” said Garrard coach C.J. Lynn, a Danville graduate. “Sammy threw a great game tonight. He threw a lot of strikes and kept us in the ballgame even after we got down 4-2. He kept us in the game by throwing strikes.

East Jessamine volleyball was on the verge of sweeping Garrard County 3-0 Tuesday night, but a lack of focus led to a 3-2 loss at the hands of the Lions. During the first two games, the Lady Jags were passing the ball as well as they had all season, according to coach Hannah Wheeler. Good passing and a solid attack helped East overcome some deficits in the first two games. It trailed Garrard 10-8 in game one before going on a 6-0 run to take control 14-10. East never trailed again in the game and went on to win 25-17.
