The George Rogers Clark boys and girls basketball teams came away with a sweep in a doubleheader Friday night at Norton Gymnasium. In the opener, the Cardinals came away with a 73-56 victory over Madison Southern. In the nightcap, the Lady Cardinals rolled to a 60-26 victory over Paris. The win over the Eagles was the 12th in a row for the Cardinals, who have showed no signs of letting up after winning two tournaments during the Christmas break. “It continued our roll and we're winning,” Clark boys basketball coach Scott Humphrey said.

The George Rogers Clark High School boys and girls bowling teams ended their season in the regional tournament last weekend in Corbin. The girls team, a No. 10 seed, beat Corbin in the first round, but lost to West Jessamine in the baker round. The boys team, seeded 11th, lost to Madison Central in their opener. Clark's region consisted of 14 teams - Clark, Corbin, East Jessamine, West Jessamine, Fleming County, Lee County, Madison Central, Madison Southern, Montgomery County, Rowan County, Wayne County, Lynn Camp, Harlan County and Fairview.

George Rogers Clark coach Scott Humphrey will be pulling for Vinny Zollo when Western Kentucky takes on Mississippi Valley State in the opening round of the NCAA¿Tournament  tonight. George Rogers Clark tried to duplicate its previous performance Tuesday night at Norton Gymnasium. The Cardinals, who fell behind by 18 points and then rallied for a 64-59 victory over Dixie Heights last Saturday, staged a late comeback again, but came up short in a 53-49 loss to surging Woodford County. The setback was the second in the past four games for Clark, which had a 17-game winning streak snapped at Rowan County last week in Morehead. “I could see this one coming a mile away,” Clark coach Scott Humphrey said afterward.

For the first time in more than a decade, George Rogers Clark High School is looking for a new football coach. Longtime coach Paul Columbia stepped down Friday after 13 seasons at the helm. During his tenure as coach, Columbia went 71-75 and resurrected a program that compiled back-to-back winless seasons from 1997-98. The Cardinals went 3-8 this past year and lost to Ryle 35-21 in the opening round of the playoffs last month. “I decided today (to step down),” Columbia said Friday.

As a U.S. history teacher at George Rogers Clark High School, Amy Madsen made a class suggestion, and it was granted at the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year. “I thought a black history class was in need,” said Madsen. “I suggested it. I had to go through a process, write out a course outline and they agreed wholeheartedly.” Madsen has obtained her masters degree and is pursuing her doctorate in black history. In her third year teaching at the high school, she was able to put her main focus of education to good use. Madsen said the students have responded really well to having the class.

It was one and done for the George Rogers Clark baseball and softball teams in the opening round of the 40th District Tournament Monday night. The Cardinals nearly overcame a five-run deficit with three runs in the last three innings, but it wasn't enough in a 6-3 setback to Bourbon County in a rematch of last year's district final at Whitaker Field in Mount Sterling. The Colonels move on to tonight's finals and will take top-seeded Montgomery County, which rolled to an 11-1 victory in five innings over Paris in the first game of a doubleheader.

The George Rogers Clark girls softball team concluded the regular season with three losses over he weekend. On Friday night, Clark dropped a 5-4 setback to Harrison County. Clark led 4-3 going into the sixth inning, but the Fillies crossed the plate with two runs in the bottom of the sixth frame. Megan Terrell and Peyton Skillern paced the offense with two hits apiece, while Sydney Anderson, Kolbi Mitchell, Whitney Conkwright, Hunter Thomas and Madison Norton each had a hit. Conkwright gave up eight hits, walked four batters and struckout three on the pitcher's circle.

LEXINGTON - Ian Rowe never imagined he would end his prep tennis career by making back-to-back appearances in the state tournament. Reaching the big stage was a feeling of accomplishment for the George Rogers Clark senior after he lost his first-round match, 6-3, 6-1 to Corbin's Conner Maguet Thursday afternoon at Shilito Park. “I would have never dreamed of making it to state, let alone making it to the regional final my senior year when I was a freshman,” he said. “I thought I was never going to be playing with these guys.

For the second time this week, the George Rogers Clark baseball team failed to score a run. The Cardinals (12-16) dropped a 4-0 loss at Lexington Catholic Wednesday. Earlier this week, East Jessamine defeated Clark 3-0 at Cardinal Field. The Knights (26-6) tallied all of their runs in the third inning off Clark starter Brent Stoneking. Stoneking scattered five hits, walked three and struckout one batter in his time on the mound. Derek McKenzie relieved Stoneking and gave up a pair of hits, while striking out one batter.

The George Rogers Clark track and field team achieved a goal during the Class 3A Region 7 meet Thursday at Southwestern High School in Somerset. The boys and girls teams finished fourth in the event and will send two runners - Cora Kerber and Sandra Skinner - to the state meet next weekend. The boys' 4X800 team, comprised of Grayson Brookshire, Austin Richards, Ben Petrey and Thomas Busby are expected to receive an at-large bid. "Placing in the Top 4 is always the goal,” Clark coach Dodd Dixon said.

The George Rogers Clark softball team dropped a 7-4 setback to Montgomery County Thursday night in Mount Sterling. Clark led 2-1 going into the third inning, but the Lady Indians went ahead for good with a three-run outburst in the third inning. Clark will be the No. 3 seed in the district and will take on the Lady Indians to open the postseason on May 20 at Bourbon County High School. The two teams split the two games, with Clark winning 4-1 on April 25 at Cardinal Heights. Clark collected seven hits, led by Sydney Anderson with a single and a double.

The George Rogers Clark baseball team celebrated Senior Night with an 11-3 win over Paris Thursday at Cardinal Field. The Cardinals secured a No. 2 seed for the district tournament and will take on Bourbon County when the tournament begins on May 20 at Montgomery County. The Indians are the No. 1 seed and will play the Greyhounds. The Cards will take on third seeded Bourbon County to open the postseason and defense of their 40th District title. Clark senior Wes Caddell drove in a pair of runs in the first inning with a bloop single to right, while Ryan Frye connected on his first career home run with a two-run shot over the left-field fence in the third inning.

The George Rogers Clark baseball team split two games over the weekend. The Cardinals (11-13) lost to Franklin County 11-1 and escaped with a 2-1 victory over Powell County in nine innings. Clark scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth on Brent Stoneking's walk-off home run with one out in the inning. Stoneking paced the Cards' offense with two hits, including a double to go along with his solo home run to cap the exciting finish. Chandler English followed with a pair of hits, while Luke Sharrock and Zack Roe each had a single.
