Ephraim McDowell Health is sponsoring a free health screening 8:30 a.m.-noon Jan. 20 at Centenary United Methodist Church in Danville. Health screenings that will be offered are cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure, body mass index, lung capacity, bone density (for females over age 50), stress, sleep disturbance, colon cancer (take-home kit for anyone over age 50), sun damage and flu vaccines. After the screenings are complete, participants will have the opportunity to discuss their results with a licensed health professional.

Dear Editor: November is American Diabetes Month and the Lincoln County Health Department would like for people to think about a few diabetes facts. Sixty percent of adults with diabetes have high blood pressure; two out of three people with diabetes die from heart disease and stroke, and 68 percent of people with diabetes do not consider cardiovascular disease to be a serious complication of diabetes. When managing diabetes, it is important to remember the connection that it has with heart disease and stroke.

Boyle middle girls team hosts fundraiser A September holiday shopping fundraiser for the Boyle County Middle School girls' basketball team will be 2-6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012, at BCMS. The fundraiser, which is open to the public, will have a variety of vendors displaying new fall products from companies such as Mary Kay, Avon, Pampered Chef, Tastefully Simple, Thirty-One, Pink and Zebra. Most booths will have “cash and carry” options and many vendors will also take orders for future pickup.

Five weeks ago, Ashlee Taylor’s world was turned upside down. She’d been sick for a couple of days, but had been drinking more and more for a month before. On Oct. 5, the George Rogers Clark High School freshman went to the emergency room at 4 a.m. After her bloodwork was completed, they found the problem. Ashlee was a Type 1 diabetic. With that diagnosis, the lives of Ashlee and her family changed. With Type 1 diabetes, a person’s pancreas doesn’t make insulin, which helps digest sugar into their system.
