She was the wife of a preacher. She was a mother who stayed home and reared, for the most part, two children. Later, she worked for a time and during the process forged deep relationships with friends and business associates. Attractive and capable, she was promoted into positions of more responsibility and assumed an intricate post of management that had led to fiscal stability in her home. During the years of marriage to her husband, she had been a solid partner of the ministry that was expected from the church members they served.

Bigger, better, faster, stronger, more bedrooms, larger televisions - it's a race to see who has more. More money, more home, more cars, more, more, more. We never seem to have enough ... we just need more. It has to be the latest, the greatest, the fastest, and/or the prettiest. P90X is old school. Insanity is the new exercise craze. Whether it's iPhone 5, or we hear, “I have the new Samsung7,” when does it end? It doesn't. It's the road that leads to nowhere. Once you get on this fast-moving treadmill, it's extremely difficult to get off. Most of the time, folks break down and fall flat on their faces from fatigue and exhaustion.

Dear Editor, The United States is in an unparalleled economic crisis. The jobless rate keeps going up daily with no end in sight. Our newly-elected president recently signed into law a bill banning the torture of prisoners of war. While on the other hand, the federal government is using our tax dollars to torture the unborn with partial birth abortions. God is not and will not be mocked. Whatsoever a man sows, so shall he reap. I am talking about the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Billy Graham and M. Wendell Anderson.

Dear Editor, I wonder how many at the polls will vote to save unborn babies from a horrible death? And how many will vote to keep marriage between one man and one woman? Or how many will vote just with the economy in mind and ignore the laws of God - that if kept will automatically bring propriety and peace to any country? God asks the question in Psalms 94 who will stand up for him and work against evildoers who are within the law? For those who do not know - Obama supports abortion and homosexual marriage.

To the editor: There is a mighty Army that has not yet been heard at the polls. Fifty percent of church-goers are not registered to vote. The registration deadline is Oct. 6. Reasons to register or re-register: 1. moved 2. remarried 3. turned 18 years of age before Nov. 4 4. have not voted in the last two federal elections. Come on, people, get informed, get involved and fight for God and America! Shirley Wilson Waynesburg

Dear Editor, My son's love for basketball still amazes me at times. With some advice from some very close friends and family I directed my attention to the Mitchellsburg Baptist Church basketball league. And after some research, my son, at the age of 7 is now playing with them. The children on these teams range from kindergarten to 8th grade, and the coaches and referees are all Christian people. I felt like this would be a good fit for my son to help him learn more fundamentals of basketball and to help him grow spiritually.

Dear Editor, Religious fanaticism. That's a phrase frequently bandied about in the course of political debate. A phrase that is used by some politicians to marginalize a group of people or an ideology that is not in lockstep with what they are advocating. If we put everything in its historical context, and use the oldest documented historical reference, which is the Bible, we find that religion predates politics. We also find that when man lived according to the laws of God, there was no need for political governance.

We hear it in the news every day. Many Americans are losing their jobs, their homes or their retirement funds. Financial worries are everywhere, and even though some experts are reporting that the economy may be recovering, almost everyone acknowledges that there is still a long way to go. Our current economic situation may be new to us, but financial difficulties are not new. In 2 Kings 4:1-7, the Bible tells the story of a widow whose husband...

Have you ever felt like God was far away? Have you ever prayed and felt like He wasn't listening? Have you ever tried to worship, but didn't feel like His presence could be found? Have you ever thrown up your hands and looked toward heaven and asked, "Where are you?" You are not alone. I've been in that place a few times, and I know others who have been there as well. Life is full of ups, downs, twists and turns, and sometimes we lose sight of God in the midst of it. Fortunately there are some things that never change.

I've been out picking blackberries again. This has been my best year yet. My theory is that the birds are so filled up on locusts that they are letting me have the berries this year. I have been picking two quarts almost every day for two weeks. I've made syrup, jam, pies and cobbler. I am covered in scratches and I don't even want to know how many pints of blood the ticks have drained from me, but I am enjoying myself immensely. My love affair with berry picking started many years ago when I was a little girl.
