The Winchester Music Club started the new year by meeting at Beverly White Towers, Maple Street, with the residents for an evening of gospel music on Friday, Jan. 25. William Cooper presided and Cecil Garrett read the collect followed by the group singing Stephen Foster’s “Beautiful Dreamer.” Mrs. Cecil Garrett, program chairwoman, introduced the Sam Marsh Family Singers who presented the following sacred selections a capella: “Day by Day,” “Jesus, is the Way Make,” “Broken Pieces,” “Fire in My Heart,” “When Peace Like a River” and “First Day in Heaven.

Heart of Danville's Whimsy in Weisiger Summer Concert Series continues today with Gospel Night at 6 p.m. in Weisiger Park at the Boyle County Courthouse. Performers will include the Lexington Avenue Quartet; Two Journey of NIcholasvIlIe; Trinity Heirs of Richmond; Junior Fields, Sheila Alcorn, and Sherri Cloyd from Pleasant Run Baptist Church; and Still Voice. Bring lawn chairs and picnic basket for an evening of music and fellowship. The Whimsy in Weisiger Summer Concerts take place every Thursday evening starting at 6 p.m. throughout the summer with special Friday shows June 23 and July 14 and 28, weather permitting.

Touring together for more than 35 years has been both a blessing and a challenge for The Isaacs, a family bluegrass and gospel group. “We are a close family anyway,” group matriarch Lily Isaacs said. Touring, Isaacs said, only enhances that bond. “We started performing in churches just for the fun of it, and never dreamed it would blow up like it has. It was never actually a plan,” Isaacs said. This Saturday, Lily will perform with daughters Rebecca Isaacs Bowan and Sonya Isaacs and son Ben Isaacs at Central Baptist Church in a benefit concert for the Salvation Army.

Gospel music will be featured at the Bluegrass Heritage Museum Friday night when Winchester native Jane Burnam appears in concert. Her performance at 6:30 p.m. will be the first in a series of special programs at the museum in conjunction with its special Smithsonian exhibit, "New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music. " Burnam received a Bachelor of Arts in elementary education, specializing in music, from Morehead State University in 1969. She retired from the Clark County public schools in 1996.

A self-proclaimed "gypsy" from Yuma, Ariz., and a gospel singer from Harrogate, Tenn., stand at their booths, selling their collections and meeting locals. The gypsy is Jimmy James, a Dumpster diver who said he travels around the country selling things that others have thrown away. Thursday marked the beginning of the 22nd annual U.S. 127 Yard Sale that stretches from West Unity, Ohio, to Gadsden, Ala., with stops in Boyle, Mercer and Casey counties. Billed as the world's largest yard sale, it stretches 654 miles through five states.

Members of the Red Hat Society from several states convened for a Wild West weekend in Winchester: Cowgirls with Hattitude. The ladies enjoyed line dancing, horse racing, tap dancing, shopping, gospel music and other entertainment. The Pink Hat ladies are honorary members who are under 50. Jim Sheldon's musical message is spreading nationwide.  The Danville resident's song “God is Looking at My Heart” has reached the Christian Country Top 40, and he celebrated the launch of his new album, “I Belong to Jesus” at the Community Arts Center in Danville on Monday, according to a press release. Sheldon, a New Orleans native, served as a music minister for many years before joining his first quartet in 1994 and discovering Gospel music was his true calling, according to the release.

Dinner set at Butchertown BUTCHERTOWN - A chicken and ham dinner will be 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Butchertown Community Center. The menu also will feature potato salad, coleslaw, baked beans, rolls, beverages and homemade desserts. Proceeds will benefit the community center. Gospel music planned Eagles Nest Church will have a gospel singing 7 p.m. Friday with the Calvary Messengers. Refreshments will be served after the performance. The church is located at 260 Tank Pond Road in Parksville.

“You can call it mountain music, call it old-time gospel music … but you will be blessed,” Mayor Ed Burtner said when he introduced the The Isaacs before their concert Saturday night at Central Baptist Church. The band then launched into a lively medley that included such gospel classics as “I’ll Fly Away” and “There’s Power in the Blood.” The Isaacs, top national recording artists in their genre, performed to benefit the Clark County Service Unit of The Salvation Army, a Christian charity that helps victims of floods, tornadoes and other disasters, provides Christmas gifts for children of incarcerated parents and does many other things to help the unfortunate.

Growing up in Breathitt County, Richard Jett had a big dream — he wanted to be a country music superstar. It didn’t take long, however, for Jett to realize that his talents were better suited to other endeavors, instead becoming a teacher, entrepreneur and, eventually, superintendent. But the music bug never left him, and two decades ago, Jett decided that, if he couldn’t perform himself, he would make it possible for others to get their moment in the spotlight. The Appalachian Troubadours were born out of his desire to help young people from Eastern Kentucky and to find a way to become involved in the music business.

Danny Ray Baker, 53, son of Mervin Eugene and Beverly Jordon Baker of Clark County, passed away at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 7, at Clark Regional Medical Center. A native of Clark County, Danny was a former Anchoring Systems employee and a member of the Corinth Baptist Church. He loved playing the guitar and other instruments, singing gospel music, collecting Native American artifacts, and all that the outdoors had to offer. Danny especially enjoyed spending time with his nieces and nephews, sharing his love of music, instruments and the great outdoors.

Priscilla Johnson and her family are faithful members of Faith Temple Pentecostal Church in Stanford. She says they love Faith Temple and want it to be their church home for a long time. But the Boyle County woman has a second church family that she loves just as much — and, just as importantly, loves her back. That second church family is Centenary United Methodist Church in Danville. It is where she is employed as custodian. But it’s much more than a workplace.
