LEXINGTON - If there is one thing that seems to be irritating Kentucky coach John Calipari more than anything else about this year's team, it would be the lack of commitment to individual workouts by the players on their own. Last year Michael Kidd-Gilchrist seemed to always be working out in the gym on his own and took other players with him. Two years ago it was Brandon Knight and then Josh Harrellson who both spent a lot of extra time in the...

It's been a long fight and a long-distance effort for an engaged couple to open Nicholasville's first 24-hour gym. Anytime Fitness is already selling memberships and will be open soon at 459 Keene Centre Drive. James Adamitis and Aimee Green met at an Anytime Fitness location that Green was managing in Louisiana. They began the journey toward opening their own locations about two years ago. “We knew that we wanted to open up a business, be our own boss,” Green said. “He was kind of sick of corporate America, and I had been doing this forever - it's what I knew how to do, and I love it and enjoy it. So we together bought the rights for three Anytime Fitness franchises and then set off trying to find our first location.” With Adamitis' family in Ohio and Green's in Louisiana, they searched for a location not too far from one set of parents, and they found the region they wanted in central Kentucky.

“Unusual” installation of ceiling tiles at West Jessamine High School's gymnasium nearly 20 years ago has caused loose panels that need to be replaced, an architect told the school board Monday. A loose ceiling panel in the gym drew the district's attention in late December. Margie Jacobs of Tate Hill Jacobs told the Jessamine County Board of Education at a special meeting Monday that roughly 70 percent of that 4-foot-by-8-foot panel was unsupported. “We estimated that it was close to 170 pounds of stuff that would be coming down if it were to fall,” Jacobs said.

Since he's been an AAU basketball coach for 18 years, Karl Towns Sr. had little choice but to often take his son, Karl Jr., with him to basketball practices. “He started playing basketball when he was 2 years old and would come to the gym with me,” said Towns Sr. “My wife was working, so it would be up to me to get him ready and keep him busy. He would jump right in and play with my AAU guys. He got to play with guys like Dexter Strickland, Kasim Drummond, DeSean Butler, all NBA guys.

The philosophy at Precision Chiropractic that fitness and chiropractic care go hand-in-hand has been so successful, the business needed to expand after outgrowing its present space. Precision Chiropractic opened in Stanford in Nov. 1994, and earlier this month they expanded their fitness capabilities by opening Precision Fitness Center. Both businesses are owned and operated by Dr. Sterling Skipper and his wife, Wendy, and Gene Goode, who is a personal trainer. The fitness center, located at 500 Cutoff Street in Stanford, is not a traditional gym and it's open to everyone - not just chiropractic patients.

LIBERTY - A different design for flooring was chosen Monday night for the new Jones Park Elementary School gymnasium. Since there was no added cost, the Casey County Board of Education chose a floor of parquetry, an inlaid woodwork in geometric forms, rather than the traditional flooring. Mark Clary, architect with Lucas/Schwering in Lexington, brought the two patterns to the board meeting asking which one the board wanted - one like the Boston Celtics have on its gym or the traditional style?

HARRODSBURG - This was not the way Chris Souder wanted to close the building. The Mercer County girls were playing their last game in the Mercer County Elementary School gymnasium that has been theirs for more than 20 years, and they went out not with a bang but with a whimper. Souder said there would have been no shame in a loss to 12th Region powerhouse Wayne County, but the Mercer coach said the way the Titans played in their 56-35 loss Friday night left a bad taste in his mouth.

LEXINGTON - Some Kentucky basketball fans have been in panic-mode since Saturday when UK lost a second straight game, something that has happened just one other time in coach John Calipari's four seasons here. The panic intensified when UK dropped out of the Associated Press national rankings this week after losing at Notre Dame Thursday and at home to Baylor Saturday. But Calipari is not alarmed by the fans' response. “I don't think it's all of our fans. You have a few. Our fans cheered this team coming off (Saturday)

The Winchester-Clark County Health and Wellness Center is undergoing a routine shutdown and is temporarily closed for business. The walking track is undergoing yearly maintenance and is scheduled to re-open on Thursday. The natatorium also is closed to the public and will resume operation on Aug. 18. Workers began cleaning the facility last Saturday. “We've started working (in the gymnasium) from top to bottom,” Board Chairman Charlie Eury said. “This is a scheduled shut-down period.” The pool has been drained and will be refilled within the next week as workers spruce up the facility for the next 12 months.
