HARRODSBURG - Attended by business men and women from around the world, Wausau Paper officially unveiled its newest expansion, priced at about $220 million, Thursday at its Harrodsburg plant. Hank Newell, president and chief executive officer, said the Harrodsburg expansion is the largest in the company's 100-year history. Wausau worked with companies in Brazil and Spain, among other places, to create a 138-ton “Yankee Dryer.” “This machine represents a significant step forward,” Newell said, noting that it represents what can be done when people from across the globe are willing to work together.

HARRODSBURG - Mercer County Board of Education members voted 4-1 Thursday night to close the former Harrodsburg High School building on East Lexington Street. The proposed facilities plan would close the building, which currently houses Mercer County Intermediate School, and has drawn the ire of some Mercer residents. At a public hearing last week, seven people spoke in opposition to closing the Lexington Street facility. More than 100 area residents signed an online petition demanding that the school system find some way to keep the former Harrodsburg High building open.

HARRODSBURG - A romantic comedy - and then some - is the late-winter offering at Ragged Edge Community Theatre. Written by N. Richard Nash, “The Rainmaker” opens Friday. Director Steve Sleeper says “The Rainmaker” is much more than a romantic comedy. “It is a romance with many funny parts, but it deals with how our experiences and the words others use can shape us and our image of us,” he explains. “It exposes how words can build up or tear down. “It is a romantic comedy with a great deal of charm and wit, but it also has a meaningful message in regard to human relationships.

HARRODSBURG - A man was taken to the hospital after a fire early this morning heavily damaged a duplex in Mercer County. About 5:15 a.m., Harrodsburg Fire Department responded to a duplex on Greenbriar Drive for a structure fire. Assistant Fire Chief Rick Maxfield said the right unit of the duplex caught fire, and the cause was likely electrical. The occupant of the duplex awoke about 5 a.m. and realized his mattress was on fire, Maxfield said. The man attempted to remove the bed from the house, but the fire spread.

HARRODSBURG - Police were contacted after someone cut the lock on a building belonging to Jerry D. Gullett between Feb. 8 and 11.  Gullett contacted police, explaining that the person (or people) allegedly stole 24 to 30 wrenches, a black Chicago mig welder and two Flow Master mufflers from his building on Boone Street in Harrodsburg. The items are valued at about $1,000.

Working student. Budding artist. Curious musician. Animal activist. Aspiring paramedic. These are all phrases that describe 18-year-old Travis Jenkins of Harrodsburg. The Mercer County senior began drawing about two years ago, following in his mother's footsteps. “She's definitely my biggest source of inspiration,” Jenkins said, referring to his mom Dianna. The teen explained that, while growing up, his mom would always draw him pictures of the things or shows that he liked.

Firearm stolen HARRODSBURG - A Harrodsburg man came to the police station to report the theft of a firearm Feb. 13. The thief allegedly made entry through the rear sliding window of the victim's truck.  The 9mm pistol is valued at $350 and was taken between Feb. 9 and Feb. 10 from Crozier Avenue.  Theft by unlawful taking of a firearm is a felony offense. There are no suspects at this time. Thieves steal jewelry HARRODSBURG - Between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Feb. 14, an unknown person or persons allegedly entered a residence on Daisey Street and left with about $9,000 in jewelry.
