For black men and women, the news is not good when it comes to their overall health. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, blacks die from heart disease at a rate more than 40 percent higher than whites, while the death rate from all cancers is 30 percent higher for blacks than it is for whites. The death rate from prostate cancer is more than double for blacks than it is for whites, and breast cancer deaths are higher for blacks as well. Ephraim McDowell Health is launching a partnership with one segment of the local black community in the hopes of improving their health status.

Casey courthouse offices spruced up LIBERTY - Renovation on new offices for Casey County Clerk Eva S. Miller has begun at the courthouse, according to county Judge-Executive Ronald Wright. The offices, vacated by Circuit Clerk Craig Overstreet when he moved to the new Judicial Center adjacent to the courthouse, will house property transfers, marriage licenses, wills, settlements and various other documents. Miller moved her office to the old Casey County Bank building, across the street from the courthouse, a few years ago due to dampness.

Child and adult care food program available The Danville-Boyle County Senior Citizens Inc. Adult Day Care, 569 Jean Drive, is participating in the USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program administered by the Kentucky Department of Education. Meals will be served at no separate charge to enrolled participants at the center and are provided without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. Participants eligible for free and/or reduced price meals must have a complete application with documentation of eligibility information which may include a SNAP, SSI or Medicaid case number or names of household members and income information.

Young people will be the focus of the fourth annual Unity in the Community week of worship. The schedule for this year's series of services, set for Nov. 8-12, was unveiled at a news conference this morning at Constitution Square State Historic Site by pastors from the participating churches. The series will run nightly Sunday through Thursday and include special services for children and teenagers. The series, which brings together pastors and congregations from churches of different racial and denominational backgrounds, drew large audiences during its first three years.

Pastor Jefferson Calico is on a mission to minister to the health needs of members of his faith community as well as their spiritual needs. Brand new to Lincoln County and still a fairly new concept, health ministry is a way to promote holistic health and wellness among a faith community. When members of the county's Baptist Association decided to form a new church with an alternative informal, contemporary focus they didn't give it a health ministry mission. But with parents like Dr. Forrest Calico and Dr. Patricia Calico and an unusually high percentage of medical professionals in the congregation, it was an obvious choice for Pastor Calico.

Homecoming McCormack Christian Church - Sunday, the church will have its annual homecoming. Eddie Whittemore will be the guest speaker. Sunday School begins at 10 a.m., followed by morning worship at 11 a.m. and a noon meal. Everyone is welcome. The church is located on the banks of Hanging Fork Creek, at the forks of McCormack Church Road and Moores Lane in¿Lincoln County. Pleasant Valley Baptist Church - Sunday, the church will celebrate its 146th anniversary and homecoming.
