Heavy traffic around the Boyle County school campus drew the ire of some commuters this morning. Danville Police Chief Jay Newell said there were typical first day issues on Perryville Road and South Danville Bypass, which drivers use to access the campus. Newell said there are a larger than normal number of people dropping off students individually and spending more time than usual walking younger students into buildings on the campus, which includes three schools. “We are aware it is bad, and we are doing our best with it,” Newell said.

On the television screen, hardly anyone noticed a glitch. The Quaker State 400, the long-awaited debut Sprint Cup race for the Kentucky Speedway, appeared to be a success, with Kyle Busch taking the coveted checkered flag. Despite the excitement surrounding the event, some fans — and even drivers — experienced headaches behind the scenes. A race that has been 13 years in the making experienced a growing pain when a major traffic jam snarled traffic on Interstate 71 before the race.

Editor's note: Taken from the Danville 911 records, the Police Blotter represents a history of the initial calls and the information used by the dispatcher to send officers to investigate complaints. It is not necessarily an indication of what the officer found upon arrival at the scene, or of how the complaint may have been dealt with. Traffic slowed to a crawl, and then a full stop. This we found curious, because we didn't expect heavy traffic into Gatlinburg on an early spring Tuesday. As our car inched forward we saw what was causing the commotion. A small group of ducks was huddled in a tight circle in one section of the four-lane road. Cars were merging to the right to avoid hitting them. I'm an animal lover through and through, very tenderhearted, and I was horrified to see one duck on its back thrashing and rolling in apparent pain.

Heavy traffic can be a pain. With the hope of easing that pain and improving safety, local officials including Nicholasville Mayor Russ Meyer and Jessamine County Judge-executive Neal Cassity approached the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet in 2010 to ask for possible suggestions for traffic on U.S. 27. The result is a  “U.S. 27 Access Management Plan,” which, if fully approved, will govern access points along the highway between Man O' War Boulevard in Lexington and just past Baker Lane in Nicholasville.

State transportation officials say changes will be coming to a heavily trafficked and consistently perilous Danville intersection known to law enforcement simply as “The T.” The Danville Transportation Committee began looking at the intersection of Hustonville Road and the South Danville Bypass earlier this year to see if anything could be done to relieve the gnarl of traffic and reduce the potential for crashes. The state Transportation Department apparently concurs with one of the group’s primary conclusions and plans to add a southbound right turn lane at the intersection.

It was a night of exciting finishes at Ponderosa Speedway Friday, with three features decided in down-to-the-wire races and one ending in a dead heat. Brad Neat of Dunnville held off a hard-charging field of competitors to pick up the $1,500-to-win special for the Good Neighbor Pharmacy Super Late Models, P. J. Feistritzer of Danville faced a strong challenge from an up-and-coming driver before taking his third straight win in the Kentucky National Guard Pro Late Models feature, and Benji Lee of St. Joe charged ahead for the lead with three laps to go to earn a spot in victory lane in Hardee's Modifieds.

Their first two games were different from each other in every way, but both may have been good for the Boyle County boys. The Rebels' season opener was also an eye-opener, but they rebounded Thursday night with an easy 6-0 win over Garrard County. "It's a good way to bounce back from a really tough defeat," Boyle defender Matthew Schuhmann said. It was just what Boyle needed after a 7-1 loss to West Jessamine in their opener - which might also have been just what it needed.

By MIKE MARSEE marsee@amnews.com LANCASTER - Garrard County will get no better wakeup call than this. The Golden Lions were getting kicked around by Casey County in the first half Friday night, just as they had been kicked around several times in their first seven games. But just when it seemed they were sleepwalking toward their fourth straight loss, they snapped out of it. Garrard scored 23 points in the fourth quarter to beat Casey 37-33 at Dyehouse Stadium in the kind of game that the Lions hope will end a season-long funk.

Close calls in traffic outside Nich-olasville Elementary this year have caused concern among the school’s staff as it continues to be the only elementary school in the city without a police officer directing traffic in the morning and afternoon. While the school’s address is on West Maple Street — also Ky. 29 — parents drop off and pick up their children on 5th Street on the west side of the school. Nicholasville police Maj. John Branscum said Rosenwald-Dunbar and Warner elementary schools have officers directing traffic because they are off Ky. 29; he said Brookside, located off Etter Drive, is staffed because of heavy traffic from nearby factories.
