I have recently returned to Danville after living in Washington for nearly 15 years. I understand there are more than a few foreclosed and bank-owned, unoccupied homes here in Danville, what really depresses me is that on High Street, on one of the houses across from me the siding has come off so much that the interior framework is visible from the street. Or the windows are broken out, and the roof looks like a giant sat on it. Or the bank-owned property next door has a hole in the roof that goes clear through to the basement, and the foundation is on the verge of collapse to the extent that the front door casement looks more like a trapezoid. It seems like they only need to mow the grass to keep code enforcement at bay. How can someone improve the value of their home if the ones surrounding it make the neighborhood look like a ghetto?

Details continue to emerge about the victims and the alleged shooter in a double murder Monday in Danville, but information about what led to the killings remains sketchy. Police say Phillip White of Lancaster entered 477 High St. after 4 p.m. and found Thomas W. Hager Jr. holding Mark Snyder, 21, of Waynesburg and Ted Sparks, who lived at the house, at gunpoint. The men were apparently on their knees with their hands behind their backs. Sparks was the father of Snyder's girlfriend.

To the editor, I'm just writing about the article I read concerning the traffic light on Main and High streets. There are hundreds of people who live off of High Street and that intersection is the only way we have of getting out of our neighborhood. So it takes all of us at least 10 minutes to get out every time we try to leave our homes. There is also a church and a few businesses off of this street. We do not have an option to go out any other way. It is also a lot safer for the school buses to exit High Street with the signal light.
