The reason Dewayne Alcorn lives and works in Boyle County has a lot to do with what happened back when the 51-year-old Parksville area resident was a teenager. He was born in Indiana and raised in that state and southern Michigan. His parents decided to move to Boyle County but spent only a year here before returning to Indiana. It was during that year that Alcorn, then 17, met Sheila King, then 15. “Sheila was the girl for me,” he says. “When my folks decided to return to Indiana, I knew I would be coming back here because of her.” Alcorn graduated from high school in Indiana in 1978, then came back to Boyle County in 1979.

Kentucky has passed the biggest hurdle on the non-conference portion of the schedule. The team’s next three games, starting with tonight’s contest against Mississippi Valley State at Rupp Arena, aren’t reminiscent of the past three encounters, but will give Kentucky coach John Calipari and his staff a chance to implement some last-minute changes over the Christmas break and examine who’s in and who’s out when...

When he tried to explain what he needs freshman point guard Brandon Knight to do on the basketball court, Kentucky coach John Calipari turned to a football analogy. “When a two-guard or a three-man or four-man breaks down an offense, like they break it off and go do their thing, it's kind of like the running back instead of taking this hole, he bumps outside and tries to go outside,” said Calipari. “But if the quarterback decides that he's not going to hand it off where he's supposed to and he runs the other way and he gets knocked out and fumbled, you go, ‘Why would you do that?

Kentucky guard Brandon Knight didn’t mind a break following Kentucky’s win over Indiana last weekend. “We’ve been playing a lot of basketball and we’ve had a lot of practices,” he said. “A lot of the guys play a lot of minutes, so I think the rest time will help us get our legs back so we can prepare for the next game.” The Wildcats were scheduled to return to practice today after taking Sunday and Monday off. During the two-day break, Knight was honored by the Southeastern Conference office on Monday and was named Freshman of the Week following his performances in wins over Notre Dame and Indiana.

LEXINGTON — DeAndre Liggins has been seeking a breakthrough reminiscent of last year when he brought instant energy on the court as Kentucky’s sixth man. Since he’s been cast into a starting role this season, the junior guard has struggled to find his niche as one of the team’s starters, but came through in a big way Saturday, scoring a career-high 19 points to lead the Wildcats to an 81-62 victory over Indiana at Rupp Arena....

LEXINGTON — The numbers did not look that bad for freshmen Terrence Jones. He had 10 points, eight rebounds, three steals, two blocked shots and one assist in 24 minutes against Indiana here Saturday in an 81-62 Kentucky victory. However, he was also only 3-for-11 from the field, had three turnovers and got in foul trouble that frustrated coach John Calipari. The coach was not happy that Jones didn’t seem in tune with what he was being told to start the second half — and then he picked up his third foul 13 seconds into the half.

LEXINGTON — The game was not nearly as one-sided as the final score indicates because Kentucky was still behind midway of the second half and once again had too many starters in foul trouble. Yet John Calipari’s proved here Saturday that they can do one thing — they can win ugly. They might not have always matched Indiana’s physical play, but they hung together and won 81-62 in a game that left Calipari with plenty of teaching points. “Any time you win, you are happy,” said Calipari.
