STANFORD - The second reading of the ordinance that establishes the joint 911 center between Lincoln and Garrard counties was passed Tuesday by Lincoln County Fiscal Court. Magistrates Johnny Padgett and Terry Wilcher once again voted against it, while Magistrates David Faulkner and Jim Adams voted for it. Judge-Executive Buckwheat Gilbert cast the tie-breaking vote to pass the ordinance. Wilcher voted against the first reading of the ordinance last month, saying he did not agree with increasing land line fees to support the move.

Avoid home-based tax schemes As 2005 draws to a close, many small business owners are considering last-minute actions to reduce their tax burden. Most will do so using deductions allowed by the Internal Revenue Service. Some, however, may be tempted to succumb to home-based business tax schemes. The Better Business Bureau is joining with the IRS to warn that participating in such schemes may result in repayment of taxes owed, back interest, penalties and possibly imprisonment and fines.

City Commissioner Andy Williams pitched an idea to the city commission of a household recycling service during last Thursday's city commission meeting. "It's something that been a concern of the citizens of Nicholasville for quite sometime," Williams said. The plan, which is in the early stages of planning, will be a joint-effort between the city commission and Jessamine County Fiscal Court. "It's going to take some time because we've got to be able to send out some kind of information to each one of our citizens and see who wants to participate and who doesn't want to participate," Williams said.

STANFORD - City and county officials in Lincoln County are doing something they say is unusual for many small town governments - collaborating. And the effort is paying off with several new businesses coming to town, along with recreational facilities. The cooperation is why Lincoln County has been successful in obtaining grant money for projects, said Arlen Sanders, executive director for Stanford-Lincoln County Industrial Development Authority. "A lot of communities are not like that," said Sanders.

Dear Editor: Many strong arguments have been made for the need for our young people to have a skatepark. I do not think you will find many people who would object to the skatepark. I do think you will find a number of people that object to the proposed location of such a park. Residents in the area of Jackson Park object to the skatepark being located here for a number of reasons. The main objection is the traffic and the manner in which people drive on Crosshill Road. For most, there is no such thing as a speed limit.
