There's an old saying that asserts, “One man's junk is another man's treasure.” For students at Winchester Christian Academy, one man's junk is another man's artwork. Since the beginning of the school year, students in Pam McDaniel's art classes have been turning junk they collected from around the school and their homes into sculptures that are displayed at the school. McDaniel came up with the idea, she said, to get the students more excited about a recycling effort English teacher June Tompkins started at the school a few years ago. “Mrs.

Dear Editor, I read the letter to the editor a few weeks ago regarding the size of campaign signs. The person who wrote the letter was not happy with all the large signs that were being displayed. As I drove past the viaduct and passed the Hamlin property, it hit me. Thank goodness for elections and thank goodness for the large signs. I just wish they were larger so they would camouflage that junk. What I would really like to know is the following: Do the candidates who have signs on that property support Mr. Hamlin's eyesore or are they as disgusted as the majority of the citizens of Danville?

There it was in the Autotrader. "1994 Buick Roadmaster Estate Wagon" with 66,061 miles and a price of $4,400. Could this be the vehicle God was leading us to? My wife Nancy and I made the 102-mile trek, praying once more for God's guidance just before we pulled into the used car lot: "God, don't let us do anything stupid. " Before we even drove the Roadmaster, my wife said with quiet disgust: "It has rust. " And I'm thinking, "This thing is cool. " I was envisioning this cavernous land cruiser hauling a bunch of kids.

Danville is strengthening its nuisance ordinance for junked vehicles and mobile homes. City Commission held a public hearing Monday and passed first reading of the ordinance. Robert Hamlin, who owns a construction company on Lebanon Road and Quisenberry Avenue, was at the hearing to ask if he will need to screen the inoperative machines on his property from public view. City Manager Darrell Blenniss said the city needs to see if a screen will block drivers' view of the roadway near the property.

LEXINGTON - If Jodie Meeks starts making as many shots Wednesday as he did in his school-record 54-point game at Tennessee, he'll likely see a gimmick defense from Auburn. Coach Jeff Lebo said he's used a box-and-one defense before at Auburn against a prolific scorer like the one Meeks has turned into. "The junk defenses are what they are aptly named. They are junk. They don't work against everybody," Lebo said Monday. "Against him at times, if he is really going off like the Tennessee game, I would have played a triangle and two and put two guys on him. But I don't think you can live in those things.

LANCASTER - It seems you can't discuss planning in Garrard County without talking about hog farms and junk yards. The county's Planning Commission would rather talk about the future of schools and roads, but residents invariably want to talk about zoning, which, apparently, can't be done without reference to live pigs and dead cars. So it was Monday night in the library at Garrard County High School, where the commission met to solicit public input on the comprehensive plan it will eventually write and submit to the Fiscal Court.

Dear Editor, Hats off to Ms. Cocanougher. I pass down Lebanon Road daily and that so called fence that is supposed to keep all his antiques (junk to me) out of sight looks terrible. I'm sure there are more people in this town that agree. If this was an average joe's place, planning and zoning would have been out on them in no time. So it sounds like to me that Mr. Hamlin is the winner. So we must keep looking at this valuable eyesore. Vickie Reed Danville

PERRYVILLE - Police Chief Charles Parks reminds Perryville residents that April 1-Oct. 1 is the time of year that yards must be mowed, limbs and debris picked up, and any junk or unusable vehicles removed from yards. Anyone who does not abide by the city's policy, which also applies to vacant lots and empty houses, will receive a warning and then be subject to criminal charges in Boyle District Court. The charges are punishable by up to a $500 fine.

A proposed property maintenance code would forbid tall weeds, junk appliances and piles of trash in urban areas of the county if the Clark County Fiscal Court passes the measure. Magistrates are scheduled to discuss a first draft of the code during a meeting Wednesday morning. The proposal stems from an effort in 2007 to review and modify local planning and zoning policies. "What this is going to try to do is align the county more with the city as far as property maintenance codes," said Clark County Judge-Executive Henry Branham.

It was a little late, but I finally got my Christmas present from my mom last week. The nice men from Sears came by on Tuesday to deliver and assemble my new treadmill. You're probably a little confused right now to hear your favorite junk food junkie talking about fitness equipment, but don't worry. This is not the beginning of some health kick or even a crash diet. Sure, I'm like the roughly two million other women in America that wouldn't mind losing a few pounds, but a serious weight loss attempt might mean giving up Butterfinger Blizzards or burritos at El Camino Real, and I really, really can't be bothered with all that.
