LEXINGTON - Boyle County High School graduate Joe Angolia is the new communications director for the Kentucky High School Athletic Association. Angolia brings over 10 years of experience in collegiate athletics at the NCAA Division I level to the position, the last seven as the sports information director at Arkansas-Little Rock. He will begin his duties at the KHSAA on a full-time basis on Nov. 12. “We had an overwhelming number of qualified applicants for this position, but felt Joe's experience and background made him an ideal fit for the KHSAA,” KHSAA commissioner Julian Tackett said in a news release.

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association Board of Control adopted a rule that will allow for a running clock in high school basketball games. Beginning with the 2012-13 season, high school games at all levels will feature a running clock once the margin reaches 35 points in the second half. It was one of three significant moves made by the board at its meeting Monday, where it also set the dates for this fall's state football finals and completed its alteration of the postseason soccer format.

But the former Fleming County track and field standout, who makes no effort to hide the competitive spirit coursing inside her, plans to get them back. “Let me fight. Give me a half a chance to fight,” she said. “My heart is here, it's just my legs. That's the problem. " Graham was inducted into the Dawahares/Kentucky High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame last weekend in Lexington.

Kentucky High School Athletic Association commissioner Julian Tackett has penalized 12th Region basketball official Kelly Gentry for violations of the KHSAA’s conduct expectation following an incident in the days after the ejection of Mercer County girls coach Chris Souder during the Mercer-Lincoln County game Feb. 4. It isn't often the case that a team can produce competitive results in its first season. However, after staking their claim at the regional competition, the East and West Jessamine archery teams showed they weren't your typical first-year competitor as they shot national qualifying scores at the state competition. Held at Louisville's International Convention Center on March 18-19, the state competition was the first the schools competed in under KHSAA sanction. “They shot the lights out,” head coach Eric Sowers said.

Kentucky High School Athletic Association commissioner Julian Tackett was at both the state tennis and track and field championships last week and has taken an active role in trying to make changes to enhance championships in all sports for the state’s high school athletes. Obviously, he sometimes hears complaints — and did before the state track meet — and knows that input sometimes can be valuable. Tackett talked about a variety of issues with track, spring sports dates and even possible changes for soccer during an interview at the state track meet in Louisville: Question: Did the various questions/complaints about the state track meet schedule surprise you?

Among the participants at Saturday's first-ever KHSAA sanctioned state cheerleading competition at E.A. Diddle Arena in Bowling Green was the East Jessamine Jaguars' Coed squad. The Jaguars, who got to the state level by way of claiming the 12th Region title in class 2A, ranked No. 10 at the end of Saturday's competition with a score of 237. Fellow 12th Region participants in class 2A included Southwestern and Pulaski Co, who ranked  No. 2 and No. 5 in the All-Girl Small and Medium categories, respectively.

Tryouts for the East Jessamine volleyball team will be July 15, from 5-9 p.m. at the high school gym. All players must have a current KHSAA sports physical and come dressed ready to play. It came as no surprise last Wednesday that the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) board of control approved the new alignment for soccer districts and regions. KHSAA released a first draft of the new alignments in late November, and the same changes passed with approval last week. Under the new alignment, which will take effect for the 2012 season, East Jessamine and West Jessamine will be in District 46 with Burgin High School and Mercer County High School.

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association has adopted new regional alignments for boys and girls soccer that will resemble those of basketball and other team sports. Area boys and girls teams would be grouped into two districts within the 12th Region that exactly match the districts in which those schools play baseball and basketball. The KHSAA Board of Control approved the alignment at its meeting Wednesday that redraws the 16 regions based on feedback from the membership and discussion from the board and takes effect next season, at its meeting Wednesday in Lexington.

The wait is almost over. Lincoln County High School football kicks off the 2011 schedule Friday night, with the annual Death Valley Bowl the introduction of the latest Patriot squad. When head coach Mike Settles takes the field with his team Friday night to face Danville, he will be leading one of the largest teams he's had since taking over the helm four years ago. “We're right at 70 kids,” said Settles. “This is the largest group that we've had since I've been here to make a commitment since January.

Whatever the description, Monday was hot, and, Happy Sleeper, 5, had the solution. “It’s a great day for the pool,” she said, as her mother, Sarah, and three siblings prepared for a dip at the William E. “Bunny” Davis Recreational Complex pool. The National Weather Service estimated that heat indexes east of Interstate 65 reached between 100 to 109 degrees Monday, and officials advised residents to minimize outdoor activities and maximize fluid intake.
