A basketball court is adjacent to the Rev. Marvin King’s office at First Baptist Church. When time allows, King puts up a shot and reflects on his basketball career at Drake University. However, his time is mostly filled serving as pastor of his church, located on North Highland Street. An adventure story with funny bits is set to entertain the crowds in Weisiger Theatre as DramaCentre presents "Fair Maid of the West. " Director Anthony Haigh says the play was chosen because the drama department wanted to do something Elizabethan that wasn't necessarily Shakespeare. Playwright Thomas Heywood was a popular playwright of the day who wrote more than 200 works and reached the pinnacle of his popularity after Shakespeare's death. "'Fair Maid of the West' as literature is not brilliant, but as a piece of entertainment is very exciting," Haigh notes.

Several hundred people gathered Monday at First Baptist Church, Second and Walnut streets, for the annual singing and commemoration honoring the late civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and many also participated in a march through downtown Danville. Those who gathered said they were honoring a legacy that has major relevance to challenges that still exist and not just a symbolic connection to King, who would have turned 83 on Sunday. One of Danville's native sons, Dr. Marcus Stallworth, who was inspired by local African-American leaders and the works of King, capped off the celebration with a speech on King's legacy.

The first doses of H1N1 vaccine began arriving in Clark County a couple of weeks ago and continue to trickle in, according to Clark County Health Department Nursing Administrator Karen King. The Health Department and its community partners have given out about 500 doses of vaccine thus far, most of which were the nasal-mist variety, to high priority groups such as emergency personnel, medical providers, child care workers and parents who are caring for small babies. The latest shipments to arrive have also included a few doses of the injectable vaccine, but the Centers for Disease Control say it will be the middle of November before mass amounts of the vaccine begin to arrive and be given to the general population.

The energy during Monday's celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day was impossible to miss at First Baptist Church, Second and Walnut streets. For more than 30 years, the event has taken place to honor and remember King, a man who stood at the front lines of the civil rights movement in America. This year's celebration was led by Marvin Swann Jr. after longtime coordinator Norman Bartleson, 75, died  in September. Swann, who was a close friend and co-worker of Bartleson, thinks the local civil rights activist would have been pleased with the celebration's turnout, titled “Let Freedom Ring.” “We definitely missed Norman,” Swann said.
