At a statewide meeting of emergency managers, first responders and government leaders last month in Louisville, attendees overwhelmingly stated the number one lesson they learned from last winter's ice storm was that, at least for a while, in a widespread emergency, we will be on our own. That means that the state shouldn't plan on immediate relief from the federal government, counties shouldn't plan on the state and able-bodied individual citizens' plans...

March is right around the comer and March is designated “Severe Weather Month.” Are you ready? Even if you prepared an emergency supply kit last year, this is the time to check it; bring the medical records up-to-date for your pets and make sure all the food and water containers are fresh and ready to go. Most of us haven't gotten this far, so we need to start from scratch and first look around the house to select an appropriate room or...

While most people are getting out their scarves, gloves, hats and winter coats, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is busy mobilizing its resources to clear a path through snow and ice this winter season. The cabinet has almost 320,000 tons of salt and almost two million gallons of liquid chlorides on hand at numerous locations statewide. It will use approximately 1,000 state-owned trucks, more than 175 state-owned loaders and more than 300 contract snow and ice trucks to keep the roads clear.

PERRYVILLE - Back in Daniel Boone's day, and on other occasions since, Kentucky has been famously referred to as “the dark and bloody ground.”  But never in the state's history was that phrase more apt than on Oct. 8, 1862, when Perryville was littered with thousands of dead and dying soldiers. Visitors to the museum at the Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site this weekend will get a visceral reminder of that gory chapter when they take in a new exhibit dedicated to battlefield surgeon Dr. Robert McMeens, who worked tirelessly to save what he could of his Union comrades but could not save himself.

"My mother was an organist, and that sort of prompted me in my early years to become interested," Jim said. "But my interest peaked in the middle of 1960 when ... a company in New York advertised a kit organ, so my first effort was to build a kit organ.

A few bad holes spoiled the whole match for the Lincoln County girls golf team Tuesday at Dix River. Lincoln finished below its expectations and 20 strokes back of the winning Somerset Lady Jumpers after disastrous play on just a few holes. "That was pretty much what did us in today," said Lincoln Coach Jackie Pence. "The girls have had a time keeping their focus for a whole round. Somerset shot well today but they didn't have any score that we're not capable of shooting. " Lady Pat Lindsey Rankin finished the match with a team-low 44, a score shared with teammate Korey Coleman, but Pence used her as an example of how one bad hole can change a game.
