The Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center was still a relatively new facility in the early 1960s, and the state fair was an event we never missed. Every August, Mom and Dad loaded the three kids into our 1956 white-over-blue Chevy - or maybe it was blue-over-white, I can't remember - and with windows rolled down we'd take either Crittenden Drive or the Watterson Expressway to the gate and sit in line to pay by the carload. We didn't notice the heat so much. Air conditioning hadn't made its way into our home, much less our car. The Watterson was still four lanes, maybe six in spots, and we kids occupied ourselves by looking for the top of the double Ferris wheel to appear, the first sign that we were getting close.

The West Jessamine boys' golf program is making a name for itself across the state and showing that the likes of KIT titles and state championships are no longer safe in the hands of private schools. At the Kentucky Invitational Tournament last weekend, the Colts defeated three-time KIT defending champion St. Xavier, which was going for its 20th KIT title overall. The win came in dramatic fashion as the two schools were tied at 298 after 18 holes and needed to go to a playoff to determine a winner.

Goodbye, Irene. That seems to be the common phrase up and down the East Coast this week. The earthquake that rattled the Washington, D.C., area was quickly washed away by the wind and rain of Irene. I've included this in my column before, but the need for being emergency prepared is ever present. The season is upon us now for sudden and severe storms, floods and tornados. Now is the time to give some thought as to how to best prepare food for your family in weather emergencies. Collect at least a three-day supply of food for each family member.

The Kentucky Department for Public Health is encouraging residents to start the year by testing their homes for radon. Radon is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas that can enter homes through cracks in the floor or spaces around utility pipes and can accumulate to unsafe levels unless properly mitigated. “Radon is a form of natural radiation that comes from the decay of uranium in the ground and which can potentially lead to lung cancer,” Dr. Stephanie Mayfield, commissioner of public health, said in a state news release.

Your rods and reels are in pristine condition, right? They have new line on them and are just begging for you to take them to the water to catch a fish or two for supper, right? Sure they are. Have spiders closed up all the eyes on your rods to the point where you will have to take a brush to clear them out? Are your reels so gummed up that it sounds like a wagon wheel with no grease when you turn the handle? Well, not all of us are on the right page as far as keeping our fishing equipment in the best of condition for our next outing on the water.

If I asked you what food, money and the Internet all have in common, would you know the answer? Most folks probably would think I was referring to the millions of mouse potatoes - you know, those folks who live online - but that's the wrong answer. Bagels is the answer I'm fishing for, but I know that doesn't seem logical, so let me explain. At your local grocery store, perhaps you've seen a brand of prepacked meal kits called Funny Meals. This kit is where food, money and the Internet have come together and it all leads to fun and learning for your kids.
