Henry Walker says he didn't have a choice when it came to taking a job at Kroger when he was 17 years old. His mother, who worked at the home of Richard Morris, Kroger manager at the time, made him take it. "She didn't give me a second choice," he said. He did choose, however, to stick with Kroger for 44 years until his recent retirement, something he was not expecting when he took the job. "My intentions were to work while I was in high school," he said, adding he decided to continue working instead of attend college after his wife, Betty, became pregnant with their first child.

Four days before Christmas, I was grocery shopping at Kroger with my 21-month-old grandson. In my haste to take the hungry boy home, I parked the shopping cart in the parking lot stand, lifted him out, and absentmindedly left my purse in the cart. As soon as I got home, I realized my mistake and in a panic, went inside to call Kroger. On my answering machine was a message that my purse had been turned in and I could pick it up at the Kroger customer service desk. I grabbed some crackers for my grandson and drove back to Kroger.

Baker Storey McDonald, a Nashville-based property management company, has purchased the Kroger Plaza. According to the Nashville Business Journal, BSM acquired the property for $3.8 million, and plans to have 90 percent of the space leased by March. “They want to take the empty space they have and make it more viable to tenants,” said Todd Denham, director of the Winchester/Clark County Industrial Development Authority. BSM worked in conjunction with Bealls Outlet Stores Inc. to find a suitable location for a Burkes Outlet, which will occupy the old Goody's space, Denham said.

He goes to the spot, located at the top of a hill and surrounded by shrubs, about twice a day, once in the early afternoon and once around dinner time. Welch said he began the practice after feeding a couple of cats behind Kroger for a while. “I just kept on coming back and before you know it, there were about 10 or 11 cats,” he said.

I tried grocery shopping in the Danville Walmart recently and only two lanes were open. There were at least eight customers in each line, and even the self checkout lanes were full. There are more than 20 lanes, so it's utterly ridiculous that only two were open. I left my cart, full of groceries, and informed the staff they would have to put them away because I could not be checked out in a timely manner. I spent nothing, and if I see the same conditions in the future, I will stop spending my hard-earned money in Walmart all together.

There is a proverb that says many hands make light work, and that seemed to be the case for the group gathered Saturday morning in what has become an annual event. Jim Gage, who owns One Duck Farm LLC in Danville, said the sizable donation he and his wife, Sheree, make to Harvesting Hope each year is their way of embracing their community and of sharing from their good fortune. The couple moved here after selling a business in Arizona and right away began putting their energies into their new hometown, first by adding financial support to the new greenhouse project at Boyle County High School.
