Paul Smiley will be an excellent Danville city commissioner due to his philosophy of voting independently. Unfortunately, there is an unfair rumor circulating in Danville that Paul will vote in a block with certain other commissioners if elected. We have talked to Paul, and we assure you this will NOT happen. Paul will listen to all information about any issue, then will vote what he feels is in the best interest of Danville. For example, we currently have three commissioners who appear to vote together frequently.

When I learned Paul Smiley was running for the Danville City Commission, I was compelled to write in support of his candidacy. I worked at Kentucky School for the Deaf for 11 years. “Smiley” was an amazing leader for the school. Effective leaders have a vision, and his vision for KSD was to provide opportunities for young people and emerging leaders to shine. The athletic department thrived under his leadership, and the City of Danville would thrive with him as a commissioner.

Centre College is now known for hosting vice-presidential debates, but the school has a tradition of discussing big issues that was passed on to Kentucky School for the Deaf by one of the college's prominent former students. Literary societies began forming at Centre in the early 19th century, as they had at other colleges around that time. For a country dealing with its growth and moving toward civil war, there was plenty of heady subject matter. “At the time, classes were primarily rote memorization and recitation,” said Bob Glass, special collections librarian at Centre's Grace Doherty Library.

Burgin saw its five-game winning streak come to an end Tuesday with a 25-23, 26-24, 25-15 loss to visiting West Jessamine at Burgin. “This was a heartbreaking loss for us. We felt prepared for what West would bring to the court, but they just proved to be too much,” said Burgin coach Maggie McKnight, whose team fell to 8-6. “We stayed right with them the first two sets, even gaining some significant leads. After losing the second though, we just couldn't recover mentally. I look forward to meeting them again.” Danville 25-25, Kentucky School for the Deaf 15-8 - At Danville, the Admirals (2-10)

The snaky promenade wove its way through the gymnasium at the Kentucky School for the Deaf. Duos “drove” around the room, Person A the driver, Person B the passenger. The passenger kept eyes closed, trusting the driver to keep him or her from running into anyone else. The duos bobbed up and down, knees bent for a few paces, then upright again, turning, stopping, and accelerating. Squeals of excitement and trepidation erupted from the students from time to time but the atmosphere was one of expectation and enjoyment.
