To the editor, After listening to the discussion I was convinced by the remarks of our publicly elected officials and other agency leaders the I-75 connector project is a waste of taxpayer money. No one in the audience believed their remarks and arrived at the opinion they only want to “expand the tax base as rapidly as possible.” A much better use of the funds in my opinion: • Complete the Eastern bypass. This is needed to relieve congestion on main street in Nicholasville and expedite traffic south on 27. This benefits Nicholasville and workers that travel to and from Lexington and Nicholasville • Make U.S. 27 six lanes, Lexington to Nicholasville.

Local farmers committed to preservation To the editor, As Kentuckians observe Earth Day 2013, this seems to be the perfect occasion to assure consumers that American farmers remain committed to preserving the environment for the next generation of food producers. And they do this in many ways. Farmers are not scientists, but many possess insightful knowledge and expertise of the environment in which they work. They constantly observe the conditions of their natural resources.

To the Editor, In the words of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “I have a dream.” However, I need your help. I would love to get together for a group picture as many former Clark County basketball players as possible who played on the Kentucky High School All-Star team against the Indiana All-Stars. The photo would include, at a minimum, the following players: 1952 - Linville Puckett; 1958 - Paul Smith; 1960 - Tommy Harper; 1969 - Larry Gay; 1970 - Bobby Newell; 1981 - Cindi Clay; 1981 - Velma Jordan; 1984 - Keith Jordan; 1988 - Jennifer Berryman; 1990 - Dante Gay; 1990 - Lea Robinson; 1991 - Maisha Thomas; 1992 - Stephany Davis; 1998 - Wes Burtner; 2003 - Andrew Preston; 2004 - Bo Harris; 2007 - Preston Knowles; 2011 - Corey Rogers; 2011 - Preshia Rogers and 2012 - Bopper Stenzel.

Waters' views wouldn't hold up in court To the editor, Jim Waters' guest column published in your March 20 edition is intellectually cowardly in that Waters' arguments are based not on a recitation of any statistics or report from any scholarly or independent body. Rather, his entire position is supported by resorting to that old tired chestnut - blame it on the attorneys. Well, these attorneys are tired of hearing that somehow we are responsible for the entire ills of society and would like this opportunity to set the record straight.

What has happened to the America I grew up in? When I was growing up if you got in trouble at school you were in a lot more trouble at home. If you got a spanking you would get one more if not two at home. Guess what? That behavior did not happen again. Nowadays your parents, as well as the teacher who gave you a little discipline would be arrested, they would lose their jobs and go to jail. In the meantime you would qualify as a ward of the state, be entitled to years of therapy and most likely end up on our welfare roles because of your poor and wayward upbringing and abuse.

Is Lincoln county, Kentucky still in the United States of America? Last week my sister Zelda Sneed had a letter in the I.J. She  called me that day upset. (I was at the hospital with our dad.) She asked if I would get into trouble if she put a letter in the paper. My response was this is still the USA and she was entitled to her own opinion. If she wanted to write a letter then write one. Could I have stopped her? Yes probably. Why would I want to? This is the USA. For those of you that think I wrote her letter, clearly you do not know me very well!

I read the response from Mr. Hogue. I must give kudos on the letter being well written, but here is the thing: I'm not an atheist. I've never claimed to be one. I believe I said I was not anti-Christian. As far as me “expecting Christians to shut up around me.” Not true. You can tell me about religion, but if you keep pressing you will be offended. If whatever you believe keeps you from stabbing me at the ATM then God bless you and I'm all for it. If anything I would say I'm anti-bully.

When it ceases letter delivery on Saturdays in August, the U.S. Postal Service expects about 30,000 jobs nationwide to be affected, according to a local sposkesperson. How many Jessamine County postal workers will be included has been undetermined. Susan Wright, USPS customer relations coordinator for the Kentuckiana area, said no local numbers had been released as of Wednesday morning. USPS has been trying to make the transition affect as few people as possible, she said. “The postal service chose Saturday as the day to cut letter delivery because that is the day the agency has the lowest volume of letters,” she said.
