The Great American Smoke Out was Thursday, Nov. 16. Smokers who took advantage of this event tried to quit smoking for one day, then they were encouraged to quit for good. Each day, about 3,000 teens smoke their first cigarette. Of every 100,000 15-year-old smokers, tobacco will kill about 20,000 before the age of 70. More than 90 percent of adult smokers started when they were teens. Each year, 1,700 college students ages 18 to 24 die from alcohol-related injuries. Smoking also increases the risk for lung, mouth, larynx, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney, pancreas, cervix and stomach cancers and some forms of leukemia, lung diseases such as pneumonia and emphysema, heart attacks, strokes, blood vessel diseases and blindness.

Citizenship is an important even if often overlooked quality in young people today. One award is dedicated to honoring this trait in young citizens: The Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award. The four qualities of a DAR Good Citizen are dependability, leadership, service and patriotism. The 2007 award winners representative of the St. Asaph Chapter are deserving on all of these levels with active participation in their high schools, community and nation. Patrick Barsotti , son of Mark and Mary Ellen Barsotti and student at Boyle County High School, takes his good citizenship "beyond what most high school students could only imagine" according to his letter of recommendation submitted by Debbie Wagner.
