The Lincoln County girls and boys tennis teams battled hard on the courts Monday and Tuesday, but neither had a good run, with the Lady Patriots dropping back-to-back matches and the Pats losing their lone match of the week. Lady Pat Cassie Smith got Lincoln started with a win Tuesday at Danville, knocking off the Lady Admirals' Jodi Gay 8-2 at the one seed. Lincoln's wait for its next win in the match went unanswered, though, as Danville swept the rest of the girls singles and doubles matches to win easily, 8-1, and the Admirals shut out the Patriots 8-0. The Lady Patriots also struggled in their match at home against Garrard County Monday, with Alyssa Turner the lone victor in the girls' match as the Lady Lions rolled 8-1. Turner clawed her way back to earn the “W” against Alexa Slone, rallying from being down 4-1. The LCHS junior shook off the slow start to win seven straight games and claim the 8-4 victory at the two seed.

STANFORD - Twice Lincoln County and Madison Southern have met on the softball diamond. Twice it has taken extra innings to decide a winner. And twice Lincoln has come up on the wrong side of the scoreboard. The Lady Patriots fell 3-2 to the Lady Eagles in eight innings back on March 22 in Berea. Madison Southern needed nine innings to take out Lincoln in the rematch at LCHS Thursday, edging out a 7-5 victory. The Lady Eagles (10-4) used a late-inning rally to force extra innings and set themselves up for the win. After four scoreless innings, Madison Southern put up two runs in the fifth to even the game at 2-all and, after falling behind 3-1 in the bottom of the inning, tallied another run in the top of the seventh to force extra innings. The score was tied 5-5 at the end of the eighth, but Southern took a 7-5 advantage in the top of the nine after Jaycee Combs and Tara Bord scored off back-to-back pop outs.

Lincoln County Deputy Ryan Kirkpatrick said he wouldn't release the names of the two boys because they are both juveniles, but confirmed they were on their way to Lincoln County High School for a Junior Guard event on April 16. As the boys' vehicle was traveling west on 1948 shortly after 5 p.m., it went off the edge of the roadway for an unknown reason, Kirkpatrick said.

If Danville was just going to hand Lincoln County runs, the Patriots were gladly going to take them. Lincoln scored four unearned runs in the first inning off four Danville errors and that proved to be enough for the visiting Pats in a 7-3 victory Tuesday in 45th District play. “I think that let us breathe a little bit. We were focused coming in and I think that showed early in the game. We took advantage of their mistakes and that got us out to that early cushion,” Lincoln coach Kevin Bandura said.

When a Danville man decided to go turkey hunting Saturday morning, he had no idea he'd be coming home with a story to pass down to his grandchildren some day. Although he's an avid hunter, 44-year-old Bud Griffith of Webster Road had never been turkey hunting before and figured opening day of the season was a good time to start. However, once in the woods of his Lincoln County farm, Griffith had a brief and slightly terrifying encounter with a wild animal. Griffith had set up decoys about 20 or 30 yards from where he chose to sit and wait.

The Patriots snapped a four-game skid with the victory and also earned their first district win of the season. “Hit it, pitch it, field it. We did all three, and we did it well,” Lincoln coach Brad McNew said. “That's pretty much what happened. When you do that you're going to win.” Lincoln (8-10, 1-1 district)
