The state fair hosts special Kentucky youth-only shows that give local 4-H and FFA exhibitors the opportunity to earn premiums and awards for their year’s worth of effort in selecting, training, feeding and caring for their animals. In addition, all these youth may choose to stay another day or two at the fair to participate in the open show competitions as well.

Boyle County Fiscal Court received good news this week about funds that will absorb the increased cost of dead animal removal over the next two years. Mercer County, which contracts its service through the same company, is still awaiting news about if or when $15,000 in anticipated grants will come in. Disposing of livestock became considerably more expensive over the past year after federal regulations were passed requiring that the brain and spinal column be removed. The increased cost prompted Nation Brothers, the company that had provided the service in Boyle and Mercer, to get out of the business all together.

Heat stress is a significant issue for pets and livestock. With the arrival of summer, the heat and humidity combine to boost the "heat index. " The heat index is used to describe how hot it feels. In cold weather, much of that heat is used to maintain body temperature. Heat always tends to move from warmer objects to cooler objects.
