This is a story about a few Marines. Well, technically they aren't Marines any longer, but they consider themselves a part of that proud tradition of 237 years. It's a story about the Harold G. Epperson MOH Detachment 1113 of the Marine Corps League. Harold G. Epperson was a Marine who served during World War II and was killed on Saipan on June 25, 1944, giving his life to save his comrades. For his actions, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, our nation's highest military decoration.

Moved by visit to memorial Dear Editor, I would like to express what a wonderful experience it was to take part in the World War II veterans trip to Washington, D.C. Donna Mayfield, Roberta Skinner, Ed Burtner, the Marine Corps League and all the folks that assisted us on this journey have my undying gratitude. I could not imagine in my wildest dreams the effect of all the people who welcomed us wherever we were. The welcome in Baltimore, at the World War II museum and then to come back to Louisville and to be greeted by the crowds just overwhelmed me. Thank all of you with all my heart.

“He's my hero,” Frank Farmer said of fellow World War II veteran Ernest Snowden. The two met six years ago through the Marine Corps League Harold G. Epperson Detachment, and have become fast friends. “(Ernest) was there longer than any of us (veterans in the Marine Corps League),” Farmer said. “He was wounded twice, and he survived.” Thanks to the Bluegrass Chapter of Honor Flight, Snowden and Farmer, along with 17 other local veterans, were honored for their service to their country.
