This article has been requested, and I have been threatened by a “friend” that he will no longer read “Down the Lane” if I do not write about this story. So, P. H., this one is for you. If you think you have heard this story before, I did write about it many years ago in the Sun, so let’s say it is back by demand. However, there are times as I load my dishwasher I am reminded of the time my sister invented the first dishwasher at our home in the late 1950s.

PLEASANT HILL — The folks at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill hoped their new idea for “seed-to-table” dining would prove popular with those who enjoy fresh food in a special setting. And so it has. The last two luncheons, set for today and July 28, are sold out. Tickets remain, however, for the Garden-Side Suppers. “We are so pleased by the turnout for these events,” said Aimee Darnell, publicist for Shaker Village. “They are such a hit with people who like good, fresh, local food.

Hustonville Road offers several fast food options, but if home-cooked and free sounds better, Patty Taylor, cafeteria manager at Hogsett Elementary School, suggests families take a detour. “We’re right out here at restaurant row. If you’re going to go out anyway, you go one block over and you’ve got a home-cooked meal.” From 5:30-6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, Taylor and staff at the Waveland Avenue school are preparing a meal that is free to ages 18 and younger and $4 for adults.

Before sitting down to the table with their own families, volunteers from Winchester First United Methodist Church and other churches made sure other families had Thanksgiving dinner this year. Some worked all day Wednesday to prepare food for somewhere in the neighborhood of a thousand people. Beginning early Thursday, others delivered 889 turkey dinners to people's homes before 10:45 a.m, when attention shifted to feeding those who arrived as guests for dinner at the church on South Main Street.

Dear Editor, I just want to say a great big "thank you" to all the people who worked so hard to make our Veterans Day meal at the National Guard Armory so very special. From all the volunteers who helped serve, to the organizers, to the door prize donators, to the shuttle drivers, to the speakers and singers, it was a wonderful expression of appreciation. We veterans thank you all, and may God bless you and God bless America. Don Garland Danville

We're already into the second week of November. Can you believe it? A lot of us are already thinking about menus for our Thanksgiving meal. Herbs are just one way that we can add flavor and color to any food. Try sprinkling some lightly sautéed parsley on top of the mashed potatoes. Tarragon adds flavor to the green bean casserole. Savory, either the dried summer or the winter variety, adds a light, peppery appeal to many dishes such as eggs and beef. Now before you set these flavored dishes out for family and friends, be sure to do a "test drive" a couple of weeks before to see what tastes work for you. It's more important than ever that we take control of our eating habits.
