HARRODSBURG - Three Mercer County residents face an array of criminal charges after allegedly trying to traffic marijuana through theU.S. mailsystem, according to the sheriff. Mercer County Sheriff Ernie Kelty, Chief Deputy Sheriff Scott Elder, additional Mercer deputies andU.S. Postal Service officials recently have been investigating suspicious packages shipped to addresses in Salvisa and Harrodsburg, and made an important break in their case on Thursday. Elder's K9 unit, Damon, detected the odor of marijuana on packages being sent to 1050 Old Louisville Road in Salvisa, Kelty said.

HARRODSBURG - Mercer County Fiscal Court put three parcels of the county's official history on the auction block Saturday and the downtown buildings were snatched up at bargain prices. Though the county reserved the right to reject all offers and none of the properties fetched their appraised values, the sale of the former county clerk's office, the PVA office and fiscal court building were all approved.  Mark Henson bought the PVA building on East Office Street for $63,500.

Mercer County jumped out to a 13-run lead after three innings, then held on to beat visiting Boyle County 18-12 on Thursday. Colin Buckner had a pair of doubles for Mercer (4-1), which 16-3 after three innings, then saw Boyle make it close as the Rebels scored nine runs in the fifth. Connor Blevins had a three-run double in the first as Boyle (4-2) took a 3-0 lead. But the Titans rolled from there, scoring six runs in the first thanks to a Buckner double and three Boyle errors. Mercer added four runs in the second and six more in the third.

HARRODSBURG — The Arts Council of Mercer County has announced its 2011 calendar of events.   Starting things off this year will be preparation for its Spring Clean auction, titled “The Fantastic, the Famous, and the Fun!” ACMC fundraising chairman Greg Orth said the auction will be a varied affair. “We leave it up to the donors to define the terms as they wish,” said Orth.   The “Fantastic” category will include antiques, collectables and original works of art by some of the area’s best-known artists.

HARRODSBURG - A retired Mercer County hospital administrator, the sheriff's department, and Mercer Central Fire Station joined forces Tuesday to share emergency preparedness information and the potential benefits of neighborhood watch programs with the community. The presentation was part of Neighborhood Watch Month in Mercer. Part of Tuesday's program was designed to educate community members about what to do if they are ever in a situation such as the movie theater shooting that recently occurred in Aurora, Colo.

HARRODSBURG - There are more teenage mothers in Mercer County than in most other regions of central Kentucky, which has prompted the health department to renew its efforts to bring abstinence-based education into the public schools. On Thursday, David Mahan, a nationally-known abstinence speaker from Columbus, Ohio, addressed about a dozen concerned adults at the Mercer County Extension Office. Today, he will present assemblies to about 1,200 students at King Middle School, Ninth Grade Academy, Burgin Middle School and Burgin High School.

HARRODSBURG - Mercer County got its bats going quickly Thursday and won its second straight game with a 15-0 victory over visiting Burgin in a 46th District game. Megan Hilbert drilled a game-ending home run in the bottom of the fourth inning, was a single short of the cycle and also picked up the win for host Mercer (7-8, 2-1 district). Makenzie Isaacs went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a run, Makayla Carter had two hits, two RBIs and scored two runs and Ashley Harley was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and scored twice for the Titans.

It was opening night all over again at Danville. After watching the 20th-ranked Admirals lose three straight one-run games, Danville coach Paul Morse decided it was time for a fresh start and declared Thursday night’s game against Mercer County to be the start of a new season. And they started that new season with a bang, using a pair of four-run innings to defeat Mercer County 8-5 at Admiral Field. “Losing three in a row, we wanted to come out here today and play well,” said third baseman Rob Caudill, who had the tiebreaking single in the sixth inning.

West Jessamine made a statement with its first district game of the year Friday night. The Colts (6-2) trampled Mercer County 95-70. “If you told me coming into tonight that this would be the outcome, I would have been very pleased,” West Jessamine coach Damon Kelley said. “I thought we did a lot better job defensively tonight as a team.” Senior Chase Fain led the charge with 23 points, but it was the Colts defense that was so impressive. In the first quarter alone, West held the Titans (4-2)
