Mike Archer has a fairly simple motto by which to live: "You should do everything you can possibly do before you die. " In keeping with that idea, he's picked up a couple of acting jobs - one in a television show and one a film. Archer, who also is a guitarist, vocalist and guitar repairman, says he decided to expand his acting repertoire after working with a public access station in Casey County. He took acting classes in Louisville and decided to go to auditions in Cincinnati after a classmate e-mailed him information.

Dear Editor, I'm an avid reader of The Advocate-Messenger and certainly appreciate the support that you provide for local entertainers and the recognition that you've given to the local talent in multiple articles throughout the years. I routinely check to see who is playing music at the local establishments and am quite pleased with the information you provide. With all that in mind, I felt confident that The Advocate-Messenger would be interested in knowing that one of our very own local musicians, Mike Archer, would be playing a show on Saturday, Aug. 25 in Sellersburg, Ind., opening for the acclaimed singer, B.J. Thomas.

LEXINGTON - Mike Archer, defensive coordinator at the University of Kentucky, has resigned in order to accept another coaching position. Archer has been the defensive coordinator at UK for the past four seasons, working to build a unit that has been challenged by low scholarship numbers, injuries, and inexperience. Archer's patient building began showing signs of improvement during the 2006 season, as the Wildcats posted an 8-5 record, including a 28-20 victory over Clemson in the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl.

Mark Ebert: The news that Mike Archer had interviewed at NC State was a real surprise after Rich Brooks had previously announced that all of his staff would be back. Do you think that this is Archer's way of saying that he's tired of the criticism or that Brooks has encouraged Archer to look for another job so that Brooks can hire a new defensive coordinator without firing Archer? Do you also know the status of Randy Sanders? I have to think that he has to share some of the credit for Woodson's success this year and I remember that he had interviewed for another job before the bowl game.

Mark Ebert: Larry, 1) Seeing how Ron Hudson finally had to walk for the UK offense to improve could you see the same thing happening for Mike Archer and the defense? It's contract extension talk time for Brooks and he and Barnhart are looking at a Senior Day game where the defense gets booed and the possibility of UK getting embarrassed at Tennessee. Don't you think something has to change? Maybe this time it's the defensive coordinator that steps down right before the game at Tennessee?

Archer has interviewed for a similar position at North Carolina State. Brooks says he plans to "visit" with Archer, who is in Gatlinburg, Tenn. for a clinic, this weekend about next year and "see where it goes" from there. GRAVEL SWITCH - In 2004, a new race was added to the Great Outhouse Blowout's day of events: The Great "C.O.B. " Race, or "Celebrity Outhouse Bachelor" Race. The event had brave ladies shelling ears of corn. The one doing so the fastest and making it to the outhouse door first - to present the cob to the bachelor inside - was the winner. The prize was a lunch date at one of the event's vendors with the celebrity bachelor, as well as a gift and a bouquet of wildflowers. The 2005 Celebrity Outhouse Bachelor Race has added a few rules and regulations.

LEXINGTON - Trust could be a key word for the University of Kentucky football team this season. Not only has the coaching staff learned more about what players it can trust, but defensive coordinator Mike Archer says the players now also understand they can trust the coaches to do what is best for them and the team. "This is going to be more of a true team. Players care about each other and they now trust this coaching staff," said Archer. "When we came in here two years ago, some players didn't know us and didn't know if they could trust us. Now they trust us. " Archer says the departure of several players from the team, including starting linebackers Dustin Williams and Chad Anderson, has been overemphasized.

Mike Archer's bachelor pad is a basement apartment with a view. The view doesn't come from the small windows in his four-room apartment on East Main Street. They offer only a glimpse of sunlight, when there is sunlight. But the walls and floors give visitors a view of the occupant. There are photos of Jimmy Dean, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley and John F. Kennedy; a big screen TV; and an ash tray in the shape of an oversized beer can. And then there's the purple room with a photo of Jimi Hendrix, the writer and singer of "Purple Haze," on a wall.

LEXINGTON - Defensive tackle Corey Peters didn't want to rush his answer to what he knew was a delicate question. Yet once he did answer, Peters left little doubt about the difference between playing for new defensive coordinator Steve Brown versus Mike Archer, last year's defensive coordinator who left UK to take a similar spot at North Carolina State. "It is a lot different. I don't want to bash coach Archer, but coach Brown is more understanding. He will come and talk to you," Peters said.

After spending four years trying to rebuild the Kentucky defense and often watching the Wildcats give up huge yardage game after game, defensive coordinator Mike Archer finally seemed to be making progress. His unit played well in a season-ending 17-12 loss at Tennessee and then was outstanding for three quarters in a 28-20 Music City Bowl win before letting the Tigers score two late touchdowns. UK allowed 28.4 points per game (almost a touchdown less per game than 2005) and had 32 takeaways to rank among the nation's leaders in 2006.
